Show And the big winners are Joshua Harrison Contributing Writer After two years of hard companying the elections are finally over there will be no more ads on television or radio no more handing out flyers and the signs that are in peoples front yards will soon be put into the trash And like every election there are some winners and some losers and most likely not everyone is completely happy with the results The big question is are we better off nowthen now nov then we were 24 hours ago Unfortunately that question wont won't be answered for a along along along long time but lets look at atthe atthe atthe the outcome in a few of the themore themore themore more publicized races The big race was for the White House and once the numbers started coming in it didn't take long for formost formost formost most people to realize they we were w t hig For Forthe Forthe Forthe the first time in history t the e American people have decided to elect an African American to be president Unlike past years the race was not nearly as close as it has been There were a few states that were too close to call but once the polls I closed along the west coast Ithe the picture became clear and since that point even more votes went towards Shortly after 9 pm p.m. Sen John McCain conceded the election and congratulated the new President Elect Barack Another hotly contested race was that for was for Utah house of Rep District 49 which put the speaker of the house Greg Curtis up against Jay This is not the first time that these two candidates I have faced each other otheL The last two elections they have faced off against each other The last election they were only separated by about 20 votes But this time it was different Curtis the incumbent was not able to hold off who was able to win another close election Another big race in Utah is between incumbent Chris Butters and John Rendell There are a lot lotof lotof lotof of people following this race because of things that Butters had said during the last legislative session comments that people found races and offensive Because of this the race has become very close and no clear winner could be declared until all the votes could be counted In the end the winner was Butters Another big race that a lot lotof lotof lotof of Utahans were watching wasn't even something that was voted on in Utah That is proposition 8 in California This would amend the California Constitution to define a marriage as only between a aman aman aman man and woman There has been a lot of local push for forand forand forand and against this proposition The church donated large sums of money to fight for the proposition to past While those against the proposition held rallies and signed petitions And with so much vested in the outcome of another states election people locally followed the outcome very closely The proposition is isso isso isso so closely contested that it passing compared to not passing is separated by less then votes But at this time it looks like it will pass and the constitution in California will be changed to define a marriage as only between a man and woman |
