Show Flatfoot 56 brings Salt Lake City to its Knees Donald Aguirre Contributing Writer What do you get when you cross a 6 foot 10 inch tall lead singer a guy playing bagpipes like hes he's marching into war a musician who charges the crowd with his bass like a spear and a drummer who jumps into the pit for forthe forthe forthe the headlining band The answer is quite simple Flatfoot 56 The Chicago quartet brings in the strongest elements clements of old school Hardcore but with a Celtic twist that leaves you hungry for Shepherds Shepherd's Pie We started the band in 2000 Three of us arc are brothers lead singer Tobin Bawinkel said The band definitely brings a brotherhood feel to their show as all four of the Boys from Chicago tore it up this past Friday at Club Sound They offered their respects and gratitude to the music they love by busting out an array of cover songs that included works by Cro and The Specials The current bands are cool but if you dont don't know where they came from or where they're getting their influence from youre you're not in the right scene Bawinkel said as he described how Chicago brought them up upright upright upright right by educating them on the forefathers of the Punk scene This is a Punk show we want participants not spectators Bawinkel said to the crowd as he motioned a come closer gesture with his hand inviting them to let loose and become a part of the show The crowd listened Drawing in people lounging in the back by the merchandise tables and igniting a circle pit in inthe inthe inthe the center of the venue Flatfoot 56 united the old and the new newby newby newby by making it not only a Punk show but a Punk show worth attending I was invested in they gave us that music they said check this out Bawinkel said He described that although the music that influenced him was not from his generation it holds a big spot in his heart He is grateful for those who took the time to give him the music he plays today Punk no matter who you are is about youth Bawinkel said Punk music was passed on to him from the older generation and that thatto to see Punk music not go extinct the new older crowd needs to do the same Although Bawinkel provided serious answers to the way he sees music it was clear that he had a good time with th the t crowd in Salt Lake City The looming tower that is Bawinkel played fast riffs and ripped airwaves with his coarse voice but he never lost focus He kept the crowd not only entertained by his talent but by his playful gestures He included slips of comic relief making comical faces to the crowd and acting like a child in a candy store when playing for the audience The power of their Oi Oil working class sound and the energy that wailed out of the Bagpipes was enough to raise the hairs on anyone's neck Flatfoot was in inthe inthe inthe the house to say the least With a long tour ahead of them Flatfoot plans on getting back to writing after January with the hopes of releasing a third album as soon as the band can Jungle Of The Midwest Sea and Knuckles Up are the two current albums in circulation their third will definitely launch this group into a long and successful career quickly making them the new old school sound of Punk |
