Show A face issue of immigration youthful on I Diana Joy Jones Arts Reporter Children In No Mans Man's Land explores the tender subject of immigration through the perspective of minors The film directed by Prado was screened Monday evening at the Main Library auditorium in downtown Salt Lake City as part of the Spanish Language Film Series To bring a different perspective on the topic of immigration Prado profiles two children 13 year-old year Maria de Jesus and her 12 year-old year cousin Rene As the film commences Maria and Rene have tried to cross the border once already and have been caught The two live with their grandmother in Mexico Their mothers are hundreds of miles away in Chicago They are both desperate to join them Most people have no idea that children cross the border Prado said in inan inan inan an interview previous to Monday nights night's screening I tried to do a look took at the situation from the point of view of the mother who left Mexico to come cometo to the US U.S. to work to the situation with the kids who are trying to reunite with their families Maria and Rene are introduced to viewers within the confines of a shelter where they are taken after their first attempt to travel into the US U.S. fails The children are picked up by their grandmother but it is ur t 2 1 t j I Yr If i Kr f L t t. t J If 1 f ts i A. T O f ul J- J Jl v. l UJ Children In No Mans Man's Land is about child immigration The movie was directed by Prado 1 only a matter of time before the two try to cross into the United States a second time Prado carefully documents Maria and Renes Rene's second endeavor Prados Prado's search for undocumented minors who were also willing willingto to share their story with her took approximately a year and a half Prado left numerous children with her contact information but none of them responded except for Maria and Rene Eventually she bought a temporary home on the border for several months to further aid her pursuit I didn't realize how challenging it was going to tobe tobe tobe be for me to actually find someone who was willing willingto to be on camera and tell their story Prado said I Iwas Iwas Iwas was thinking Im I'm trying to tell a story that will shed light on crossing the border in this humane way Then I got there and it was wasa a totally different deal I found this underground world of smugglers drug traffickers organ trafficking and child trafficking you name it So when youre you're in that world people are very distrustful Within her film Prado t I r 1 rh t- t keeps her focus off of the gritty underworld and on the children Her purpose seems to be to share a astory astory astory story of a generation of youth eager to escape poor conditions Most often the Mothers leave to secure jobs in the United States and send money back into the US U.S. to pay for their childrens children's needs Children In No Mans Man's Land is without narration and the films film's running time is kept short at approximately 40 minutes The power this production holds is inthe in inthe inthe the face it is given and in Prados Prado's determination to Ii tell Maria and Renes Rene's story their angst expectation and desire to come into the US U.S. USI I want whoever watches the film to be able to experience the exasperation the need the despair but at atthe atthe atthe the same time the hope of immigrants who come here so we can start looking atthe at atthe atthe the issue of immigration in ina ina a way so that we can find solutions that are more fair for everyone Prado said Prados Prado's Children In No NoMan's NoMans NoMans NoMan's NoMans NoMan's Mans Man's Land does take a unique approach to a touchy and prominent issue And she speaks from experience as well Prado 1 entered me tie US U.S. from Panama as an adolescent girl Although my family didn't really go through any of the challenges and difficulties that immigrants go though today I certainly can identify with the feeling of being a foreigner in a different land Prado said Prados Prado's film asserts that thata a staggering number of children cross into the US U.S. unaccompanied on a yearly basis In a simple yet powerful way Prado does raise questions and provides new insights to the issue of immigration |
