Show Hispanic Heritage Month Dominique Snow Community Editor Hispanic club is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month Hispanic Heritage month began September 15 and is celebrated until October 15 September 15 is the Independence Day for five countries in South America Costa Rica El EI Salvador Guatemala Honduras and Nicaragua President Lyndon Johnson started observing Hispanic Heritage month in 1968 celebrating it for one week During Ronald Reagans Reagan's presidency in 1988 the observation was expanded to a month We celebrate this month in recognition of the contributions that Hispanic Americans have haV made in America The proclamation of Hispanic Heritage Month is made yearly by the President of the United States The rich cultural traditions of the th Hispanic Hispanic- Hispanic American community have made a remarkable impact on American society stated President Bush in this years year's proclamation According to the National Hispanic Heritage Month Continue Continued on Hispanic club celebrates Continued from Al Althe Althe the National Council of Hispanic Employment Program Managers voted on a theme for this year Amy Shalom's theme Getting Involved Our Families Our Community Our Nation was picked The club exemplifies the theme given this year by reaching out to the community We hold activities and try to stay focused in the community said Hispanic Club President Pilar Gutierrez Its up to our members to see that we do doget doget doget get politically involved All of its members are actively involved in their community The club meets on Wednesdays at 1 pm p.m. in inthe inthe inthe the Student Chambers room located in the the basement of the student center This week the clubs 35 members are giving us usa usa usa a taste of Latin America From noon 1230 pm p.m. Tuesday through Thursday you can sample a different dish On Tuesday the food will be from Mexico and Peru on Wednesday food will be from Chile Brazil and the Dominican Republic on Thursday the food will be from Argentina and Venezuela The food is free but donations are l welcome Stephanie Marin Mann will be performing this Wednesday and Thursday They will be dancing to popular Latin music at the information desk located in the Student Center Mostly the club is about having a support system said Gutierrez So m making king friends in the college and making the college a fun experience and a second home for everyone The club comes together to do service projects coordinated bythe by bythe bythe the president One of their projects for this year is to serve Thanksgiving dinner at a senior living home The majority of the Hispanic clubs members are science majors One of their volunteer projects for this year is the National Science Conference which runs from October 8 We attend the conference to enhance our resumes a little more most of us just want a better future Gutierrez said About 70 percent of the clubs club's attendees speak Spanish but it is not required to be a member They want students to know that everyone is welcome to join For any questions regarding the club contact Pilar Gutierrez 1627 or Ana Archuleta |
