Show New to to DVD A whim filled childhood memory i Diana Joy Jones Arts Reporter Last weeks week's DVD release Son of Rambow exposes the bare bones of early pulp culture as seen through the sight of two childhood friends From a boom box on the shoulder of of- an an n idolized French exchange student with one strip of blond hair to define his rebel aspirations Didier Jules to the introduction of a muscle bound icon Rambo This Rambo This movie revisits a past decade with intricate detail With a lush English countryside as its background Son of Rambow tells the charming although at times a bit sugary story of two young boys Will Bill Milner and andLee andLee andLee Lee Will Poulter Will is is innocence incarnate a fresh fresh- fresh faced faced a creative eye for drawing He has a notebook fill filled d original creations The inside of a bathroom stall at school serves as his easel The enclosed space furnishes a palate of Wills Will's unique sketches es uninhibited and powered by a boyhood imagination Upheld by a strict religious sect Will isn't allowed to watch television listen to music or participate in modem modern technology of any kind A slight child with curious ey eyes hey holds ta a quiet and harmless presence He is sheltered from cinematic evils until the day he meets Lee Any time tune a documentary is shown in his classroom Will is ushered to the hall to wait until the film is over Its It's on such a day that he is introduced to Lee who is also ostracized to the halls for bad behavior Apathetic and street wise for his young age Lee is Wills Will's complete opposite Lee gives off obstinate smirks in response to the other boys boy's apparent naivety Despite their difference in lifestyle Lee quickly takes Will under his wing Lee pirates films for his self-absorbed self brother and sole provider Lawrence Ed Westwick He sits in the back of the theater and puffs on a cigarette effectuating adulthood as ashe ashe ashe he rips off popular films for his brothers brother's gain When Will sneaks an unsupervised peak of an illegal copy of Rambo the First Blood in Lees Lee's basement bedroom his imagination runs wild The sinewy hero bent on survival l catapults young Will into adventures that awaken a youthful exuberance Will strides against his religion as he swings from trees a grimy rag tied around his head and shoe polish in smears across his cheeks Soon with the infamous icon as inspiration tion the two boys enter entera a a strong friendship Their union is cemen cemented ed by the filming of their own movie Son of Rambow The effect of the boys' boys production inevitably ripples to those around them causing comic misadventures and plenty of heart tugging moments This movie is Stand Standby Standby Standby by Me with an accent It mirrors many slice-of-life slice films that transition young boys into young men The great aspect of this film other than the honest performances of its two young leads is it itcan itcan itcan can translate over to most viewers The memory contained in this film is unique to the story story but but it is entirely relatable Almost every adult child has a familiar cinema- cinema born bom symbol of some sort that pops to the forefront of its mind from time to time For that reason Son of Rambow strikes an almost universal cord It is thickly sweet at times but this ode to an era holds its endearing story together well Largely thanks to the quirks energy and enthusiasm of two young boys and their camera I Son of Rambow is rated PG for mild violence and brief scattered profanities Special features on this disk include optional commentary and including a short film Aron which inspired Son of Rambow |
