Show Supreme Court gives detainees more rights rights Commentary Ani Arakelian Managing Editor On June 12 12 2008 the Supreme Court ruled in a 5 4 vote that detainees at Guantanamo Bay Cuba have the same rights as any other person in US U.S. custody Some top leaders including President Bush disagree with the ruling but have said they will abide by it The ruling gives the detainees the right to appear in front of a Federal Court to challenge their detection The people who disagree with this ruling believe that secret documents will have to be shown in court to prove that the detainees are connected to terrorist organizations But should the US U.S. be obligated to prove these connections with terrorist The Supreme Court says yes In a criminal court case it has to be proven that the defendant has committed the crime they were accused of before they are sent to prison The detainees in Guantanamo Bay have never got their day in court They are not US U.S. citizens but they were taken from their country tort fr t T t tey Th They ey were were no not f given a atrial atrial atrial trial and were brought to toland toland toland land that is being rented by the US U.S. government They are not on US U.S. soil yet it is the US U.S. is holding them there They should and now get the rights of a person in US U.S. custody There have been a number a of stories about people be detained for forup forup forup up to six years who have been let go because there was no proof that they are or ever have been connected with terrorists This ruling will hopefully stop innocent people from I being held at Guantanamo Bay Those who oppose said that some of the detainees would be let go and start to fight against the US U.S. again In past wars POWs POW's were let go at the end of the war yet some of the detainees have already been held for six years That is longer that World War I and about as long longas as World War II But there is no end in sight for The War on Terror This war could go goon goon goon on for decades Is the US U.S. government going to hold the detainees that have been proven to be terrorists for the remainder of the war This is a question that the new president and maybe the Supreme Court are going to have to decide But for now one question has b been en answered and d detainees at Guantanamo Bay will will have have ave a chance to w fight their case |
