Show pre cents informative entertaining Monologues Monologues' Stacie Peart Arts Entertainment Editor Linda Chamberlain Babs DeLay and other faculty staff and students performed the emotional and controversial Vagina Monologues on Feb 21 and 22 The show successfully brought the audience into the minds of women from various walks of life The Thursday performance of Monologues gave the community a chance to seethe see sec seethe the show for free to encourage attendance of survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse The show also provided interpreters and free ch child ld care The doors opened minutes before the performers were to take the stage Before the show attendees could visit with people I at tables from Planned Parenthood and the Rape Recovery Center The sponsors of Monologues were also handing out roses for those who donated money to the Victory Scholarship Fund According the program the scholarship was developed at to provide money for survivors of domestic violence The scholarship provides enough for the women to attend purchase books and also pay for child care Proceeds for the Friday Monologues were also donated to the scholarship The audience poured into the auditorium at the Grand Theatre at the South City Campus in anticipation for the performance Most of the attendees were women but according to one of the first performers there was a smattering of penises referring to the men of the audience The stage was set with a simple backdrop of a projection that read V Day V Day Reclaiming Peace 2008 Chairs were lined up for forthe forthe forthe the performers to s sit t on while the watched their fellow performers and wait waited d their turn to speak into the several microphones arranged on the stage The lights dimmed and a calm announcer introduced the show and cleverly asked the audience to torum turn rum off all cell phones The lights went down and the performers took their seats The show opened with LaShawn Williams Shultz Ashlee and Nicole Fast performing the first monologue Hilariously honest the three performers not only stood at atthe atthe atthe the microphones but they also moved about lying on the stage to act out some of their words The intro expertly began the show and set the mood as audience members responded by laughing and shouting encouraging comments to the performers Uproarious laughter was heard during Vagina Workshop My Angry Vagina and The Woman Who Loved to Make Vaginas Happy while audience members could hear a pin drop during more poignant monologues like Crooked Braid They Beat the Girl Out of My Boy and My Vagina was My Village The Vagina Monologues began over a decade and the 20 monologues honestly depict the emotions of several women as their stories of awkwardness violence and survival are sincerely portrayed by real women performance of Monologues brought laughter tears shock and above all a great night of entertainment and education |
