Show Transferring steps for success Sean Patrick Contributing Writer students seeking a four- four year degree have something in common experience frustration when transferring to a year four-year institution Students at are taking advantage of lower tuition costs smaller class sizes and accessibility to teachers and professors During their time at students can expect to be challenged in their studies and to receive a quality education The majority of graduating students plan to continue their education and obtain a bachelors bachelor's degree at a year four-year institution During the transition from a junior college to a university students quickly find that the atmosphere is very different Class sizes more than double and simply getting into the right program or sequence can be an exercise in futility Ive been accepted to the U of U but denied from my major twice said Brandon Humphries an architecture graduate It is really frustrating But it doesn't have to be that way Students have many services and programs available to them to make their transition an easy one one A program offered by the University of Utah and Success Continued on page 5 Success Continued from page 1 to communication majors is an example of how easy it can be COMM students are offered a one- one credit class called a Transfer Interest Group TIG This course gives and in-depth in look at the communication sequences offered and gives students the tools necessary to succeed in their transition It also allows graduating students to transfer directly into the communication major as a junior Not every department offers this same program but by following some simple steps students can find themselves working toward a bachelors bachelor's degree in no time First pay attention to application deadlines and apply as early as possible Many universities process thousands of applicants each semester and it helps to have your name at the top of that list Second meet with an adviser Meet with both botha a adviser and an adviser from the institution you want to attend in order to understand the requirements for graduation and for transfer Advisers can be a students student's best friend and greatest ally Third attend any and andall andall andall all orientations for your program or sequence Many universities require their prospective students to attend their orientations before they are allowed to register for classes These meetings can give students important information about obtaining a degree Lastly dont don't be afraid to ask sk questions Asking qu questions will help you find the right people to talk to when you arent aren't sure what the next step is Try to find a student who has recently transferred as they may have some advice to help you a avoid oid some of the trouble they went through |
