Show Hype kills kills' Jake OConnor O'Connor Arts Ans Reporter In the consumer driven market that we live in today it is pretty hard to come by y something that we haven't already seen before This goes for movies clothing automobiles electronics food etc So how does a company make their product stand out in a crowd of other clones The answer is simple so simple in fact that it is only one word Hype As defined by Websters Webster's hype is Blatant or sensational promotion It Itis Itis Itis is pretty straightforward With so many companies constantly pumping out newer bigger and better things it leaves the consumer with a decision to make They must choose what they want to buy based on what they think of the product That Thatis is where hype comes in If everyone else thinks that its it's cool it must be cool is the basic mentality behind it Television and the Internet are mostly to blame for the spreading of hype If Ifa a popular celebrity is seen wearing a certain label eating at a certain restaurant or driving a certain car then people are going are going to follow A recent example that comes to mind is the rise of popularity in sneakers With so much hype attached to create popularity some pairs reach upwards of two thousand dollars For example the Nike Dunk New York Pigeon edition limited to pairs was released in 2005 An actual riot broke out at the location that was selling them Now people sell them for upwards of online Exclusive sneakers have been around since the eighties but in the last couple of years more and more have been released The Internet plays a very large role in this People can log on to a forum and talk about things such as release dates prices where to find them and what they should eventually be worth It has become a pretty hot trend People with no real knowledge on the subject are claiming to have tons By buying every so called hot sneaker that comes out and either wearing them in public expecting compliments or reselling them online for twice the price that they paid they the hype People like that are referred to as Hype Beasts because they only want what is popular and for that reason only They arc are ruining the culture for everyone else and should be stopped Another recent example is a mysterious movie trailer that is being played with Transformers being referred to as The Cloverfield Trailer There are shots of a party and then destruction of New York City The only information is that it is directed by JJ Abrams and the date 18 1 is displayed The Internet is going insane over this Nobody knows what it is supposed to be or what it is about It could be anything Most message boards are saying while others are saying Godzilla Some people that 18 1 are saying is not even the release date of the film but the date when we will find out what the film actually is s. s It is all top-secret top information as of right now and the creators probably love loveall loveall loveall all of the hype that the internet is causing By the time the film is actually released everyone in world will have heard of it It is techniques like this that make things stand out in today's market where people are in need for exclusive products to be different from everyone else and have exclusive information on hot new movies In the end the industry will always win simply because of hype Whether created by a public relations team in a afancy afancy afancy fancy office Hollywood executives or just an average college kid trying something new So next time you want something make sure that you want it for the right reasons |
