Show Spring break San Francisco Tina Brown Contributing Writer Spring Break is a time when some students are out partying soaking up sun on a beach or doing some much needed relaxation 12 students did the alternative The Alternative Spring Break is a program the Thayne Center hosts every year that is offered to students who can spend their spring break volunteering Each year the places activities and organizations are different Most of us wanted to go on this trip to benefit other peoples people's lives said Lora Garrison a social work major at Garrison Garris n said she couldn't wait to to help out people who are in need and spend a little time in San Francisco Nicole McDonald a student at was asked by the Thayne Center to coordinate this years year's Alternative Spring Break trip McDonald chose the Glide Foundation to have havethe havethe havethe the students volunteer with The cost of the trip was only including airfare and the stay at atthe the hostile The 12 students including one faculty member set setout setout setout out on on their adventure on March 10 and came back back- to Salt Lake on March 16 During their stay they spent 20 hours volunteering Each night the students would serve dinner to poverty stricken people they also served one breakfast while they were there They also visited with senior citizens and went to orientations to learn about the Glide Foundation Tyler Clark a student at said he enjoyed speaking to some of the senior citizens that are arc from the Philippines I like to see other parts of the world and what the poverty is like in other areas I liked interacting with other people said Vance Almquist a s student dent at It wasn't all work and no play the students did some sight seeing while staying in San Francisco They explored places such as China Town Market Street and Pier 39 Going on this trip and helping people in need changes your prospective about everything I 1 would definitely do it again said Garrison Simone a foreign exchange student from Switzerland and student at said she loved the experience of helping others on her herspring herspring herspring spring break and would do doit doit doit it again McDonald said the best part of the trip was the the different perspective of life in another city and the bond she shared with the other students It was amazing we learned a lot about the city and about the Glide Foundation It was an extremely unique experience said Almquist All the students that attended the San Francisco trip said they would go on another alternative to spring break trip and hope to do it again next year The best part of the trip was the friendships I 1 made with the people that went said Laura Gilson t F J i ry t |
