E Contributing Writer Professor Terry Teny Martin has a new class ART 1375 Photographing Diversity This is the first semester that the class is offered to the students of Martin has high hopes that it will address the issues relating to various under underprivileged underprivileged underprivileged privileged cultures groups and minorities in the Salt Lake area It is a requirement at that all students enrolled in an Associate of Arts Associate of Science or Applied Associate of Science program take one class which fits into the diversity course course category There are diversity classes offered in nearly every program in the college and now photography is among them A diversity class should teach people to empathize with and accept those who are different from themselves According to Martin there are some who are more privileged than others and it is up to them to make the changes that will allow everyone to be respected equally Martin began to teach computer graphics and beginning photography at in 1988 as an adjunct instructor in the Visual Art Artand Artand Artand and Design Department With the help of others Martin developed the photography specialization to adapt it into a Visual Art Artand Artand Artand and Design program This class just seems to fit for me Martin said From my earliest days I could never understand why the color of a persons person's skin made them different Artists have been documenting and expressing their concerns relating to oppression diversity and the under privileged for hundreds of years Martin asserts that art is a wonderful way for people to express themselves to share their personal thoughts and to have others understand them There are arc at least three directions that Martin would like to see the photographing diversity class take First to reach out to all students and allow them to t j Yi 9 t j 1 v oI i f. f S I J 1 j Photo by WE Terry Martin of the Design Department teaches diversity through photography I share their own diversities through photographs Second to teach students about their own privileges and to gain third to give those photography students interested in ina a documentary style of photography a chance to further develop their understanding of diverse people and cultures This allows them to explore their understanding through the medium of photography Photographing di diversity versi ty is for anyone who is interested in taking it but having a basic understanding of photography before enrolling is a must Prerequisites are ART 1 1050 or ART 1310 with a C grade or better 1 |
