Show Recipients meet their scholarship donors over lunch Y 4 t a q r S Sf f f r t 0 j fi I Photo by Kathryn Kathrn Jones Scholarship recipients Jason Berke left and Audrey Sanders spoke at Mondays Monday's luncheon Kathryn Jones Campus Editor EditorS S Used to be there therel weren't many requests for a luncheon providing scholarship recipients and their donors a chance to meet let alone eat No more On Monday Oct 30 the 2006 Scholarship Award Luncheon met for food a abit abit abit bit of chit-chat chit and some never to be forgotten magic Something President Cynthia Bioteau said she is isso isso isso so proud to be a part of You are the reason reason she said students and your extraordinary donors When we all come together magic hapP happens ns We wanted the recipients to meet the donors and vise versa said Judy Fisher scholarship committee member and financial aid scholarship specialist Donors need to understand where their money has gone and and students need to see who helped them she said board member and former trustee sat at a front table with Erin Perkins majoring in Environmental Technology and Michele Rutherford working towards her Associate of Applied Science degree Both were happy for the opportunity to thank a sponsor in person I almost passed out when the Dean of Students Janet Falkner told me that I had won a scholarship Perkins shared I was in her office when I heard As with most scholarship recipients Perkins saved for six years to attend worked three jobs and once here worked through getting to and from school with a broken leg Perkins said she has also been married and divorced while still managing to stay in school Thinking back Rutherford said I stood by the mailbox every day waiting for that letter When it came I was pretty calm I just felt happy Rutherford said she turned in her paperwork the day before the deadline I just couldn't see having to pay payout out of my pocket and have to pay back school loans Audrey Sander and Jason Burke Scholarship recipients and speakers at atthe atthe atthe the event felt the same They were pleased with their scholarships and W MP o le learn r more f w tS scholarships scholarships 91 WW w contact ai cial Aid td G fi Jf J h 1 tt w n J f 1 n I cc e ur Wi f fin i iC l I I thankful to the sponsors for making their dreams possible Sander who received a Foundation Honors Scholarship explained her struggle in coming to school after a a. a previous college failure She talked about the long commute and her doubts about her abilities but said she wanted to work in the occupational therapy field and was willing to do whatever it took to succeed this time My first semester was a little shaky I It t was very very hard but my grades came back was amazing to get that scholarship she said who received a Utah Higher Education Assistance Authority Scholarship spoke about his adoption at age 13 He received all state honors in basketball while in high school and fathered a child At Salt Lake Community College Im I'm living part of my dream he said The scholarship helps my son and it helps me pay the rent said he wants to be a pediatrician some day According to Judy Fisher scholarship coordinator of the development office a quarter of a million scholarships have been divvied out this year alone She is anxious for more students to see the value and opportunity in inI I scholarships |
