Show Political film doesn't rate well with audiences Jared Maxwell Movie Staff Writer As far as box office grosses are concerned the opening weekend of All the Kings Men was terrible but the movie w was s not Having an star all-star cast obviously did not help the pictures picture's numbers because All the Kings Men only raked in S 38 million The film was based on the 1946 Pulitzer Prizing winning novel by Robert Penn Warren The story follows the Louisiana Governor Boss Wi Willie Villie IIi e Stark whose rise to power leads to corruption that ends with the ultimate downfall of his political career All the Kings Men started off pretty slow and never picked up The entire film trudged along with sluggish scene transitions giving it the look of an independent or a European movie mOVIe The movie really began to lose speed after the first hour All the Kings Men wasn't boring to watch the film was just plain uneventful Most movies depicting real life events usually cut to meat of the story to keep the audience entertained This seemed to be the last thing on the filmmakers' filmmakers minds as they created the typical thinking movie It is easy to understand why the i executive producer James 1 t r Sir r i 1 v 4 sr f fr W r P df rI I Photo Courtesy Carville lIe said that this movie used politics as framework for actual human emotions All the Kings Men contained Oscar-caliber Oscar acting and the storytelling was a masterpiece Sean Penn deserves a lot of credit for how much effort he s seemingly put in to his performance because very few actors could have pulled off the role of Governor Willy Stark Penns Penn's emotions were loaded every time his character gave a speech or even spoke His line delivery as Stark to the crowds of people held enthusiasm and flailing of arms anns that were exciting to watch Starks Stark's speeches packed with venom toward some of the themore themore themore more prominent figures of Louisiana's government and Penns Penn's oratory skills assumed characteristics like the voice of God Speaking out against the theother theother theother other politicians was Starks' Starks natural all-natural opiate to keep persuading his supporters to take his side and Penn played this role like Mozart conducting a symphony It is distressing how long it took Hollywood to finally give Penn an Oscar back in 2004 Penns Penn's talent in All the Kings Men deserves a look once again by the Oscar judges Jude Law portraying Jack Burden is another 1 actor that deserves to have havethe havethe havethe the spotlight of an Oscar pointed at him Law amazed with his faux southern accent considering the actors actor's natural thick British accent The other finer points of the Brits Brit's performance included his smooth voice and exceptional facial expressions The other actors of this movie dont don't merit a mention as their performances were not at all fun to watch making it a good thing that every scene either contained Penn or Law Moviegoers interested in ina a political drama depicting that power and greed can corrupt should try this movie mOVIe All the Kings Men is rated PG 13 for an intense sequence of violence sexual content and partial nudity |
