Show Take T a e Out Outon ut Comedy orne on National Tour our Gerald Narciso Contributing Writer Last week Take Out Comedy the premier Asian American showcase made a astop astop astop stop on its national comedy tour to visit Redwood Campus In an evening where William Villiam Hung got more verbal verbal verbal ver ver- bal abuse than anything Simon Cowell ever threw at him nobody in the capacity filled auditorium left the show disappointed Well maybe the couple in inthe inthe inthe the first row did writers note trust me you will get cracked on if youre you're in the first row I learned that the hard way last time Yup I was in the back In the two-hour two showcase the Asian American comedians ans touch touched d on issues and stereotypes that Asian people live with such as math abilities abilities abilities abili abili- ties physical characteristics accents food and yes even the old myth of Asian men having little man syndrome As Paul Kim a Korean- Korean American comedian from LA eloquently put it Its not about size its it's about surprise We Ve start small then we sur sur- prise Being an Asian American myself I would have to say the myth is totally false Well Veil somewhat anyway Founder Jami Gong fresh off his appearance on the Conan OBrian O'Brian Show hosted the show He explained how Take Out Comedy initially started as a away away away way to revitalize NYC's Chinatown and evolved into this national and soon to international comedy tour Gong did a small set to open up the show He made a good Catholic Priest joke that I cant can't repeat but you can imagine Like all comedians who come to Utah Gong couldn't help but throw in a few jokes throughout the night The first up was Josh Kaufman a Jewish comedian from Brooklyn Im I'm not sure how he got on the tour he claimed he was 3 Asian but buthe buthe buthe he might have been joking but he had me giggling regardless Paul Kims Kim's set was absolutely hilarious Aside from the small jokes his set also consisted of his insight on girls as well as his histake histake histake take on suburban kids who walk around acting hard anybody who has ever walked through Fashion Place Mall could relate to that one Shawn Filipe a Thai- Thai American who was raised in Hawaii did a hilarious impersonation impersonation impersonation imper imper- of his mom for most of the set I sure hope his mom has a sense of humor If you ever thought you had dating problems I guarantee Ed Chow from New Jersey will make yours look trivial The Chinese-American Chinese comedian wondered how one of his blind dates broke open the bars and escaped from her cage Someone in inthe inthe inthe the crowd yelled out and that's why you have dating problems Rio a Japanese-American Japanese comedian proved why he was wasa a finalist on the reality show See Comedy continued on page 8 Comedy continued from page 6 Last Comic Standing His unique routine and stage presence won over the audi audi- ence The nightcap of the show was Joey Guila a Filipino from San Francisco His description in the pamphlet pamphlet pamphlet pam pam- stated he was once the only straight hairdresser in a famous salon in Beverly Hills I immediately knew after reading reading reading read read- ing that his routine was going to be interesting His act was an absolute riot and his dancing and beat boxing boxing boxing box box- ing skills were amazing In all the show was a huge success Kim joked in his routine routine routine rou rou- tine that William Hung set us Asian-American Asian entertainers back 20 years But with talent that the comedians in Take Out Comedy displayed Im I'm sure they will regain that loss much sooner than that |
