Show Somebody Else For President Sam Cooper Contributing Writer President Bush and Senator Kerry threw their final punches over the weekend weekend weekend week week- end in in what has been a scrappy scrappy scrappy scrap scrap- py no holds barred spin fest The modem modern election process in in all its theatrical two sided glory Since the candidates share many of the same positions on the major issues weve we've seen another election season filled with attack adds and flat out hypocrisy The facts tend to fall by the wayside but nobody seems to care The lack of a viable alternative alternative alternative tive candidate leaves some Americans grumbling somebody else for president dent When Americans go to the poles today they will be deciding the outcome of one elections elections elections elec elec- of the most polarizing in US U.S. history No one can deny that this election has divided America into two opposing camps But surprisingly surprisingly surprisingly discrepancies discrepancies discrepancies dis dis- dis- dis from small aside the candidates are remarkably similar They're both career politicians politicians politicians which means they know how to spin the facts wealthy On one side a Senator from Massachusetts oil oilI on the other a powerful I tycoon from Texas The lack of contrast leaves me wondering wondering wondering won won- dering how the two candidates candidates candidates candi candi- dates both powerful wealthy and white can represent represent represent rep rep- resent the myriad of culture and diversity that is America No matter how hard they try the truth is they simply cant Both candidates believe that abortion is morally reprehensible reprehensible reprehensible rep rep- but John Kerry said he doesn't seek to legislate legislate legislate leg his beliefs In a sense saying Im religious just like him just not as pushy George Bush calls Sen Kerry a flip flopper yet his justifications for the war in Iraq has flipped and flopped itself to death Sen Kerry calls the President fiscally irresponsible irresponsible irresponsible sible while the center piece of his campaign is a healthcare healthcare healthcare health health- care proposal estimated to cost nearly one trillion dol dol- lars The President accuses Sen Kerry of being a tax and spend liberal while he takes the country further into debt Both candidates if elected plan to keep US U.S. troops on the ground in Iraq until the weve we've won peace The similarities result in aSee a aSee aSee See President continued on page 6 President continued from page 5 dismal watered down and recycled debate filled with half truths and exaggerated statistics Two candidates remarkably similar exchanging ing low blows about anything perceived as a weakness Putting on the same show day dayto to day in the hopes of a good sound bite that leaves the opposing camp speechless Neither candidate has anything anything anything any any- thing new to add so they make sure they've got all the political bases covered John Kerry bought a new hunting jacket and shot a goose to let Americans know that he isn't that liberal During a recent debate President Bush called himself a good steward of the land to let liberals know mow that somebody somebody somebody some some- body thinks hes he's doing a good job with the environment The American people have been presented two similar perspectives on a variety of complex issues Why only two What if both are wrong Are political matters so clear cut that voters can legitimately choose a political representative when only two viewpoints are represented When faced with two dismal dismal dismal dis dis- dis- dis mal candidates Americans will be forced to choose between the lesser of two evils The problems is what if I dont don't like evil |
