Show y Rea Reality l' l i t Y TV T V ill meets ee t s. s S L C C i Ii t Do students students' have a asocial asocial social life Yes and no noBY F BY MEGAN CARNEY Contributing Writer Why are reality TV shows so o popular in American society Is it because we as a culture truly relate to the characters on screen Maybe these characters characters characters char char- express true human emotion at its finest Or quite possibly we just might enjoy these shows for their mere entertainment value Where else can you find every day people participating participating r in stupid human tricks r. r but at the same time not realizing realizing real- real c. c izing what they are are doing v Watching a program like one of these takes little effort on the viewers viewer's part The plot is usually very e easy sy f to follow and the characters k are typically simplistic with no real depth i r Salt Lake Community College has taken advantage of this reality TV craze and implemented their very own show The theme of the show is blind dates Two students meet together for the very first time and are followed by a camera crew for the entirety of their date The show is aired on the newly established Channel 9 newscast run by students and faculty of Special St Studies dies C Course urse Communications- Communications 1900 The students who were possible candidates forthe forthe for forthe the first blind date were asked to fill out applications similar to a personals advertise advertise- ment The candidates candidate's responses were then used to match them with others hav hav- ing similarities and related interests Students Kali Melius and Mark Copeland were the two candidates selected to participate in the first blind date Kali wrote in her application Im a single white female who is interested in someone who has an artistic artistic artistic artis artis- tic side who doesn't mind having fun and is willing to keep up with my thirst for adventure Mark wanted the ladies to know he was interesting interesting interesting inter inter- esting humorous and ang outgo outgo- ing He sai said Im turned on onby onby on onby by shapely legs but most importantly I want to meet a woman who likes dirty Mexican food and who doesn't doesn't doesn't does does- nt mind hanging with the boys Neither Kali nor Mark knew what to expect both had bad the desire to have fun while meeting someone n new w. w They met at Einstein Bagels where they exchanged a brief introduction and proceeded proceeded proceeded pro pro- with the preset plans to go bowling Olympus Hills Bowling Alley sponsored the second part of the date where both Kali and Mark showed their competitive side Right from the start Kali took a three-strike three lead However Mark didn't seem to mind when asked how he felt he said Its all right Kalis Kali's a cool chic but she's about to see how this game is really played Kali ended the bowling bowling bowling bowl bowl- ing match with a point 40 lead making it an excruciating ing loss for Mark From bowling the two went to d dinner din dinner din din- n- n ner at Sue Hiro Japanese Restaurant where lets let's just say Mark had a lesson in chopsticks and an introduction to the Japanese wine Sake After dinner the date came to an end with a hug and a private testimonial between each participant and the camera crew Both Kali and Mark agreed they had fun but there wouldn't be any future dates The next blind date show will be set more as a contest Representatives from the communications class are hoping to get plenty of eligible eligible eligible eligi eligi- ble candidates together and I pick from a hat which two will participate in the next blind date If you or anyone r you know is interested in participating please contact either myself Megan Carney at or Bennion r Spencer at D |
