Show We need to take a stand against Terrorism t. t Linda Williams Contributing Writer As of late our country has been getting a lot of flack for the decisions our president and his administration have made regarding regarding regarding regard regard- ing foreign policy and the current ar on terrorism Not only has the backlash been coming from foreign countries and foreign nationals but from US U.S. citizens as well I am included in hi this backlash yet I still wonder just how much of it is actually deserved and h how w much is just used as a scapegoat for other problems As I consider this problem I find myself believing that all the backlash is not rightly rightly right right- ly deserved Dont Don't get me wrong I am definitely not George Ws W.'s biggest fan nor will I vote for him in the next election election election elec elec- tion but I do wonder why it is that the United States is expected to solve the problems ems of the world without offending anyone This feat is damn near J ble If we send aide then we are aiding y the side if wrong we dont don't then we are the apathetic nation profiting off those who are less fortunate than ourselves For example while the world has been n so focused on the Middle East a problem in the Congo has been brewing Mass genocide by the tens of thousands of peo people pIe a day is happening So why is it that tha t I we are in the Middle East attempting t to scorch fire rITe that has had a the fuel to b burn um since the ages of Jesus and not in th the e Congo saving lives I believe that it is i iv s v due to the fact that we have no veste vested d f interest in the Congo whereas in the th e Middle East there are oil fields ready fo for forthe r J J 1 the taking and people who have the th e potential of becoming a modernized civilization civilization civilization civi civi- as we know it y My next question should Americans b be e upset that our government is only going goin g L where they can make a potential profit Based upon the values of our society capitalism and comfort I dont don't think that Americans should be upset It will eventually benefit us right I do however believe that there is a much bigger problem problem problem lem that Americans should be upset about This is the problem that the Bush administration is attempting to pass as we speak Its It's called the Patriot Act II This bill wo would ld allow the government to search your home seize your property and arrest you After arrest they never have to tell tel your family friends or employer where you are nor do they have to tell you what you are being held for then hold you indefinitely This is already going on allin all allin allin in th the name of the war on terrorism But isn't that in itself an act of terrorism The government comes into your home seizes your property and t terrorizes you and your family in the sense that you never know what has happe happened ed to you forcing forfeiture of your civil rights altogether altogether altogether alto alto- gether the very rights millions of people have died fighting for So o is it worth fighting for the war on terrorism Yes and no First of all terrorism terrorism terrorism ter ter- will never cease It has happened since the beginning of time in some form or another and will continue to happen for forthe forthe forthe the rest of time Devoting billions even trillions of dollars to this effort will inthe in inthe the end prove a waste I do believe that spending our money to eradicate Al who did attack us is worth it I dont don't however approve of the eradication eradication tion of certain foreign nationals in the name of the war on terrorism This is a poorly-named poorly and feeble attempt at playing playing play play- ing on the act that occurred against the United States in an effort to gain popular support I U |
