Show i in 11 i mum Letter To the Editor Dear Editors I am writing in response to Scott Stratton's article in the February issue of The Globe Utah is Broke And Youre You're Paying for it As a student who already pays outrageous out of state tuition fees I cant can't describe to you how frustrated I am with the thought of having to pay more What really bothers me is the indication that the Regents are assuming that our parents pay our tuition While some students do get assistance from their parents parents parents par par- to pay for school I believe that the majority of the students pay if not all the fees most of them Our parents have to to work and pay for their own lives as well And that's if both our parents parents parents par par- work With the unemployment ment rates today Im I'm sure there are many single income families with children who are students or are students themselves Most of us work at least one job while still trying to achieve our academic academic academic aca aca- demic goals Its hard enough paying almost 1600 dollars for two 3 credit hour classes a semester as a non resident or around five hundred as a resident resident resident resi resi- dent then you add t the e cost of parking and books and well no matter how you look at it that is isa isa isa a lot of money for a part time student to come up with There are options like grants and financial financial financial finan finan- cial aid but not everyone fies Because of the prices of tuition I have to extend my goals to fit around my payment schedule schedule schedule sched sched- ule for classes Increasing the tuition prices only makes this process longer not only for me but for the rest of the students struggling to pay the current prices In one of my classes my professor professor professor pro pro- fessor had a scheduled surgery and was going to be out for two weeks The school was notified of his absence and we were told that there would be a substitute to take over so that I we were following the course plan Every class we showed up and waited and after twenty minutes or half an hour there was no substitute there was no teacher Four classes were vere missed without a wink from the school about it Im I'm sure for most people it would be bea a blessing to get out y TT r Your T Tuition Increases 1 Shall I Not Pass Photo Courtesy of New Line Cinema of 4 classes but this a core class for my major and quite frankly I paid a lot of money for it Why am I being cheated on what I paid for because the school didn't didn't didn't did did- nt assign a substitute to take the place of the regularly scheduled teacher At the Sandy Campus we already deal with small classrooms classrooms classrooms class class- rooms sometimes overflowing with students a lot of times crammed up to the whiteboard in inthe inthe inthe the class If we are going to pay more we should be seeing results We are already paying such high costs and we dont don't get the proper education we pay for or a comfortable classroom to be in Is there going to be a change in these areas once the fees are increased What are they being increased for if not As a student who has to work a full time job and a part time job to go to school part time I could not make it to the march on Capitol Hill on February 12 but butI I am hoping to get my voice heard by sending this letter not only to you but also to The Board of Regents and our states state's representatives As Scott put it we need to fight for our right to have a good affordable tion Sincerely rF F.
