Show Selig e I Strikes fl e Agai aiD By Justin McBride Sports Editor Everyone's favorite baseball commissioner Bud Selig has a problem He cant can't make up his mind about the Star All-Star game Less than a year after the 2002 Star All-Star game ended in a tie this required another column of its it's own Selig now seems to think that the Star All-Star game should mean something First of all MAKE UP YOUR MIND N Now ow that I have that off my chest we can take a look at the Star All-Star games newfound importance Lets Let's pretend for a minute that you are New York Yankees manager manager manager man man- ager Joe Torre You are at the top of the American League by 10 games going into the Star All-Star break and you will be managing the AL Star Star All team You have no control over your starters because the fans vote them in You have no control over the pitchers because that decision ultimately falls on the managers and the commissioner However you do control the rest of the bench Now knowing that you have control of who is in your dugout and knowing that should the AL ALwin ALwin ALwin win and the Yankees make it to the World Series the Yankees would have home field advantage advantage advantage tage how many Yankee players would YOU bring to ensure that you win the game How long would you leave the starters in before you made a wholesale change to ensure your victory It is almost as if Bud Selig has given baseball fans everywhere a nice large obscene gesture and turned his back on them The Star All-Star game is supposed to be bean bean bean an exhibition of the best that baseball has to offer Its It's supposed supposed supposed sup sup- posed to be entertaining for the fans Its It's a chance for baseball fans everywhere to watch two fantasy teams go head to head and have fun Its It's a game where Barry Bonds can run out and pick up Toni Torii Hunter after being robbed of a home run If Selig's plan goes through the days of the lighthearted Star All-Star game could well be over This brainchild of Selig's isn't in place yet Major League Baseball owners passed it unanimously unanimously unanimously unan unan- but it has to be ratified by the Players Association Lets Let's hope they have more sense than our good friend Bud O |
