Show s t Y v. v VT J I nth tiit A i J JA A A child walks among flags on Sept 11 th Photo courtesy of Public Relations Department I Remembers i A ceremony and a photo album bring the tragedy of September one step closer to home By Robyn Staff Writer It started with a procession and ended with tears The memorial service held at the Gallivan Center was just one of many The procession of fire trucks and emergency vehicles followed followed followed fol fol- fol- fol lowed by the Bingham High School band and a small group of people started on the comer corner of West and North Temple We walked along North Temple and down State Street to the Gallivan Center The firefighters were being commemorated so they had chairs set up in front of the small stage Supporters and mourners were welcome to fill in any empty space I was fortunate enough to get a spot on the step just up from the firefighters Looking around I noticed the majority of those who attended were between the ages of 16 and 30 It was really touching g to see so many different people gath gath- ered together in unity As the colors were presented everyone joined together in saying saying saying say say- ing the Pledge of Allegiance I watched as one young scout the flag Governor Mike Leavitt spoke and called for a statewide moment of silence at am As the Westminster College choir sang a fireman turned to tome tome tome me and asked if I had seen the twin towers I said no I have never been to New York He then handed me a small photo album telling me the pictures were taken the day before it hap- hap It was really touching to see so many different people gathered together in unity The first few pictures were of people standing in frond of the towers I turned the pages and t came upon a picture taken from across the river just after the first I had been hit I was in awe I watched the second hit as plane i l j jand and they came crashing down I felt my eyes burn bum and the knot in my throat tighten with every image I looked upon It showed a afire afire afire fire engine with the windows blown out and covered in debris after the towers fell There was another of about six firefighters standing with their arms anns around each other their black boots white with dust and debris The memorial memoria ended with a Native American prayer for those who had lost their liv lives s and arid for I this great nation Everyone lingered for a while after the service ended not knowing if they should clap or go solemnly back to their offices As people silently wandered back to where they came from ribbons with an American flag print were being passed out Some people attached them to their clothes or bags while others wrapped theirs around the railing J r J n q Though it was th the anniversary of one of the truly dark days in our nations nation's history I gave witness witness witness wit wit- ness to the strength and perseverance persever persever- ance attributed to this people As Gov Leavitt said Patriots in the beginning and patriots to the end i O I K I 1 t r. r w Wt |
