A By Ashleigh Leake Staff Writer Salt Lake Community College is the only college in the state that has reached out to its it's growing growing growing grow grow- ing Hispanic population and is isnow isnow isnow now taping a Spanish newscast as a companion to the English newscast This summer the Community College produced the first newscast newscast newscast news news- cast entirely in Spanish Communication students who speak Spanish fluently and students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents who have served missions missions missions mis mis- to Latin American countries countries countries coun coun- tries produce and write the show The idea for the broadcast is the conception of Ben Spencer and Isabel Peralta Spencer stated stated stated stat stat- ed the idea for this type of program program program pro pro- gram came to him when he was wasa a news director As a television news director in Texas I was under extreme pressure to recruit minority and ethnic students for entry level positions I became frustrated after visiting eight colleges colleges colleges col col- col- col leges and universities in the south not seeing a lot of encouragement encouragement encouragement of programs that make minorities and ethnic students feel comfortable in broadcast communication Having programs like this will help many minority students become polished reporters and anchors so more diversity is placed in the broadcast market Isabel Peralta is a student here at Salt Lake Community College and was a driving force in getting getting getting get get- ting this show on air She is from the Dominican Republic and Spanish is her first language She is currently working at one of the largest Spanish news stations broadcast here in America as well as Latin America She has experiencing in both reporting and anchoring the news She feels that is very important to have this program and continue to have it in the future A lot of students are from Latin America and Spanish is their primary language they need to have a Spanish newscast not only because they do not understand the language but to have the Hispanic community involved with the English com com- The first show highlighted World Cup Soccer a major sporting event in Latin American countries The show looked at atthe atthe atthe the how we as Americans really dont don't know know too much about World Cup Soccer and are not as excited or thrilled as Hispanics and Brazilians are It pointed out some of our cultural differences and what makes each culture unique Members of the Hispanic Media and Community Chamber of Commerce were invited to see the taping of the show By having them there to see seethe seethe seethe the program and see what it is doing for students funding may maybe maybe maybe be added to the program to help minority students get scholar scholar- ships and more job ties The show is taped once a week and can be seen on Channel 9 at on Monday mornings The Communication Department is hoping in the future the Spanish broadcast will not only be aired on channel 9 but buton buton buton on local Spanish cable stations as well For students who are interested in becoming involved with the Spanish newscast contact contact contact con con- tact Ben Spencer at or contact the Communication Department With the Hispanic community growing this program is not only helping minority groups it itis itis itis is helping everyone to appreciate and understand different cultures and work together successfully SeG l v ni y c y Y 9 5 d F u a 3 r ys i rr G n I 4 i t bg iiA r i sAsS A r i c c aai tir t ya r s a rp r f G I m Nt 4 Qt UN N l. v fir z k z r j. j s I h N ff N A Z hz n. n z z w. w N Z n U z v z u Spanish h television newscast anchors Peralta left and Santiago Lucero right Photo courtesy of oArt Art Kanehara |
