Show rr t I Anonymous mail E-mail Sparks Controversy Email investigated ed where allegations linked to current stu student ent body officers By Dan Staff Writer Salt Lake City- City Election day politics have long brought with them the strange said r. r Words are and the strang stranger done that at other and acts are times would seem outrageous to fit right yet at this time seem in This year is no exception Over the last couple of weeks the Globe along with news media from across the received two anonymous state self self proclaimed mails e-mails from a student anonymous concerned claiming acts of misconduct by various student leaders and student student student stu stu- stu- stu dent leader hopefuls While the Globe was established for and always will champion the cause of students recognize the tenn term it does not anonymous student in regards and to embarking on a crusade this situation gives credence to this viewpoint In this instance you have serious accusations coming from sources that claim to be students but in reality may not be students or even worse may only be mythical entities created would further their by those who own personal agendas see EMAIL on page 3 T I k t k Email Opens Eyes yes r I w F Fi i 4 ff IY from f rom page 1 e 1 f- f ot r Jr Perhaps President y Cundiff said it best when he said To be honest with you I Ir r o would II never never r respond to an Mh an anonymous letter If it is not signed I will throw it away To make allegations without offering proof of those all allegations then hiding behind the anonymous student fa facade ade Us is similar to a sucker punch thrown by a weaker child who then runs runs' and hides The Globe is in deed a champion of students students student's students student's stu- stu dents dent's rights including those anonymously accused of mist mis- mis deeds 4 t Under these auspices the Globe will address these emails emails emails e- e mails as they have the potential of unjustly having a negative impact on several student leaders that have given countless hours of time and effort to better our school Our investigation into this matter seems to have hit k close to home as the Globe Globek received an actual death threat on on its office voicemail this week Ii o. o So So what's all the fuss about In an mail e-mail received on the of March an anonymous concerned student leveled accusations against three of the current student body- body Pres Gabby Bradford Executive VP Mike Dawes and Public Relations VP Jeff Kemp Much of the accusations accusations accusations are apparently intentionally misleading The mail e-mail has enough information to show the writer has considerable knowledge knowledge knowledge knowl knowl- edge of the workings of the student student student stu stu- stu- stu dent government yet anyone with that kind of knowledge would know that the majority of accusations are based totally on falsehoods It demonized an exchange program initiated by Pres Cundiff where four of our student leaders visited the student student student stu stu- stu- stu dent leaders of our Japanese sister sister sister sis sis- sis sis- ter school International Buddhist College Minus Minus' airfare the cost of one weeks week's stay in Japan per student was a mere a bargain by any stretch of the imagination yet the cultural effects from their trip on our school is priceless It claimed that funding the school rodeo team whose actual line bottom-line expenditures are far less than nearly all other athletic programs was a misuse of funds In short most of the allegations seem to be a smokescreen smokescreen smokescreen smoke smoke- screen for the real point of contention contention contention con con- the Student Association Constitution In the mail e-mail the constitution was spoken of or referenced to at least 15 times Line after line references references references refer refer- show passages in the constitution constitution constitution con con- that were allegedly vio vio- Most of these allegations are re so vague as to render the accusation baseless What few allegations which seem to hold any validity can be easily explained Gabby Bradford President said the current current current cur cur- rent constitution is far outdated and as the Executive Council they have a duty to represent the students For years they haven't really followed it close close- ly We just did what what what-we we thought was best at the time for the students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents she said So who authored the email email email e- e mail and what was their intent The Globe has no concrete evidence evidence evidence evi evi- dence and as such accuses no one However events of the past month may shed some light on the issue As before stated the current constitution has been far outdated for many years Last year the student government worked hard to revise the constitution constitution constitution but ran out of time This year they were determined to update the document to satisfy the changing needs of the college college college col col- col- col lege in the 21 st century Two new versions of the constitution were drawn up and voted on by a session joint-session of the senate and executive council One was penned by Public Relations VP Jeff Kemp and the other by senator ex-senator Andrew Johnson While Johnson was the senator Pro Tempe at the time of the constitutional vote he has since been forced to resign because of academic ineligibility ineligibility ineligibility inel- inel due to too few hours registered last semester i Of the two new new constitutional constitutional drafts the version drawn up by Kemp was heavily favored by the executive council while the version by senator ex-senator Johnson was heavily favored by bythe bythe bythe the senate At the time the senate senate senate sen sen- ate consisted of nine members several votes shy of enough to push through Johnsons Johnson's version The day of the vote four new senators were sworn in The four in reality were not supposed to be sworn in until after the joint session Senator Dawes told me that he was going to put on four new senators senators senators sena sena- tors Bradford said I said fine if you have the selections on Wednesday but they cannot vote on Thursday because that's four extra votes of people coming in blindly Is it possible that the new senators were sworn in quickly to try and sway the constitutional constitutional constitutional con con- vote Absolutely Bradford said I have no question question question ques ques- tion that that's the case Bradford said her and Dawes had agreed to hold off on swearing in the new senators until after the constitutional See EMAIL page 8 w Email Controversy y vote That was the executive precision decision that we made to hold doff off with the swearing in She called all four of the new sena- sena senators tors and let them know they wouldn't be sworn in until after Ithe the vote due to their lack of knowledge and experience on the he issue They all totally to it she said Unknown to Bradford t however Dawes swore in the thet anew v senators on the morning before the big vote I didn't know V in until they were sworn we ve had a discussion at the joint session she said She then expressed her view that the four new senators should not be allowed to vote They were really upset about it that I was being unconstitutional about not letting them vote Three of the four new senators did vote but one abstained according to Bradford This left Kemps Kemp's version version version ver- ver sion of the new constitution to toJ J pass by a single vote Not long after that the anonymous concerned concerned con con- student mail e-mail was distributed distributed distributed dis dis- dis- dis calling Kemp Its interesting to me that this document came out outright outright outright right after this group had come together and voted on the constitutional constitutional constitutional con con- document they would take to the student body said Gordon Wilson Student Activities Director It bothers me that someone would stoop that low or try to get even but it itkind itkind itkind kind of has that appeal to it- it This guys guy's caused caused me grief so Im I'm going to cause you grief and I just think that's nate Wilson said he had no clue who actually sent the e- e mail I have no idea and I wont won't even speculate he said N Next ext we come to the second anonymous student e- e mail Sent March it bears striking similarities to the first one As senator ex-senator Johnson and senator Hanna have both expressed their views that this document might have been generated generated generated gen gen- by Globe staff to enhance this story the Globe feels not to touch upon it except to say that even though the mail e-mail alleges that Johnson and several members members members mem mem- bers of the senate composed the first mail e-mail it offers no proof of these allegations and can in no noway noway noway way be held as fact As before stated the globe refuses to accuse anyone without concrete evidence Still mixed messages from the senate continue to sur sur- face In an official response to the mail e-mail situation written by senator ex-senator Johnson the Synergy party comprised mostly of current current current cur cur- rent senators and Johnson said the author of the first mail e-mail had hadeen been een a student In n a personal conversation a couple of hours earlier with the Synergy party one senator said she had never seen or heard the individual ual and another verified that he doesn't even know if the concerned concerned concerned con student even exists When asked how the author was validated as a student Johnson said I dont don't know He laughed and continued Youre the reporter I 1 guess you'll have to find that out Could this whole mail e-mail ignominy be an action of retribution retribution retribution tion by a member or members of the senate Might there really be anonymous concerned students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents voicing their concerns The globe cannot say As before stated we will accuse no one without concrete evidence It looks as if we may just have to wait for the next anonymous email email email e- e mail to come out to know for sure A i |
