Show SETA Working for the Ethical Treatment of Animals By Kelly Dazet Staff Writer Most people do not oot have a problem problem problem lem with with- the March of Dimes But Saturday morning April 26 at Sugarhouse Park where people were gathering for a March of Dimes raising fund-raising walk there were those who did SETA Students for the Ethical Treatment of Animals was there Jessica and fellow members members members mem mem- bers of SETA were disc distributing distributing distributing dis dis- c flyers written by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine The flyer claims that money taken in by the March of dimes is used in part to fund unethical and inhumane research on animals A message in inthe inthe inthe the flyer from Paul and Linda McCartney urges people to send their checks elsewhere We weren't at all trying to stop the walk or protest or anything like that They are a good organization 1 1 r J ana and they mey ve done aone a lot 01 or of good things for children said We We were there to let people know that some of the March of Dimes funding funding funding fund fund- ing is used for research using animals animals animals ani ani- ani- ani mals including unethical testing and that this money should be redirected redirect redirect- F ed toward education and toward research using human observation Nevertheless tempers flared One hostile women participating in inthe inthe inthe the march shouted across the parking parking parking park park- ing lot I hope all your babies have birth defects Another man approached yelling that she and the doctors were frauds I People seem so hostile towards these issues its it's very political I 1 really wish that people would have an open mind about it and hear what it is SETA is trying to say r and then form their opinion But Buti I i dont don't judge us before you know i what were we're trying to teach Basically what we are here for foris foris foris is to educate our peers and our comI community community com- com I on ethical treatment of animals animals animals ani ani- mals which has a wide range of areas everything from cosmetics testing to certain particular animal i research things We deal with spaying spaying spaying spay spay- ing and neutering your pets We try to find homes if someone calls up r and has a pet they can no longer have have or or have a stray that needs a homes said Society thinks of animals as nothing and everybody is aware r that they feel- feel its not an issue of j. j animals having rights but that they r do feel pain and any experiment in which they are used should be done with the same kind of care that would be used in surgery on a human They would be given an anesthetic f a a self proclaimed animal rights activist and accounting student student student stu stu- stu- stu dent at feels strongly about the humane treatment of animals Strong enough to found SETA I shortly after beginning study as an anI I accounting student at in r SV a ah ti h r T r J t J r r January Some people equate activist and militant as the same They remember remember remember ber the June 1995 fire-bombing fire of Tandy Leather Company in Murray which caused damage and the March 1997 pipe bombing of the Utah Fur Breeders Agriculture Cooperative in Sandy which caused 1 1 million damage SETA do doesn't in any way support violence I can definitely relate with why those people are angry I know its it's frustrating Youre You're trying to get people to hear you I think they dont don't know how to togo togo togo go about dealing with it said SETA meets every two weeks at the Student Activities Room of the South City Campus Their next meeting is on May 14 The group plans to be present at the upcoming concert at the State Fairgrounds Heavy Petting sponsored by and the Humane Society on May 31 from 12 pm p.m. to 8 pm p.m. |
