| Show Distinguished Award Recipient by Ernie Geddes Staff Writer Katherine McIntyre tyre has been very busy As an associate professor of developmental studies McIntyre has been spending over five months conducting a research study on anew anew a anew new assessment program in her English Second Language writing class On Monday March 6 6 McIntyre McIntyre Mc Mc- Intyre will be the recipient and presenter at the Distinguished Faculty ty Award presentation The annual award is given to faculty that demonstrate beneficial work to the college community McIntyre will willbe willbe willbe be presenting the results of her re re- re search We are a teaching institution and this is classroom research designed to benefit the students McIntyre said McIntyre has asked her winter and spring quarter ESL writing ting classes to work on a portfolio throughout the quarter Inthe Inthe In Inthe the class students must self self evaluate evaluate the learning and writing process and periodically explain to McIntyre what they have learned and present evidence in the portfolio to justify the explanation My goal is to have each student improve in the class Students come into the class with different skill levels Some are more skilled at writing then others The portfolio isan isan is isan an individualized approach that challenges challenges challenges chal chal- lenges the students to improve their skills McIntyre said McIntyre emphasized that the students knew about the project and the assessment research from the beginning As far as Salt Lake Community Community Community Com Com- College being a teaching in institution institution institution in- in only McIntyre said We are a teaching institution This classroom classroom classroom class class- room research is being conducted to improve on the current assessment process Our emphasis has always and will always be education We want to do the best possible teaching that we can do and instill a goal of lifelong learn learning ng Classroom research research research re- re re re- search is an essential part pan of teach teach- ing McIntyre strongly emphasized that she has been present with the students throughout the entire process facilitating the learning process every step of the way When asked about what she thought the benefits would be to students McIntyre McIntyre Mc Mc- Intyre said a greater understanding understanding understanding under under- standing and improving of quality and skills Also Atso a more valid assessment assessment assessment assess assess- ment program for the students Students Students Students Stu Stu- dents dont don't absorb and regurgitate information the learn and apply it it |
