Show Summertime Driving Is Driving Me Crazy j f- f fj d j J 7 r L Weekly Whine r By a John Nielson Editorial Editor Summer is the time tune of year to sit back and reflect on all the good things in life Good things such as working full time while attending attending attending attend attend- ing school full time Good things like deciding if you should pay the Visa this month and forget forget forget for for- get the Discover card for another thirty days or orvice orvice orvice vice versa Good things like finding continual traffic jams on Utah's over-burdened over roads Since I have to drive rive a lot with my job I thought Id I'd focus a little bit on some observations observations observations that I have made while sitting in my car at various l locations across the valley The first area I would like to address is the need for some people to drive like usual when approached by a large red vehicle with flashing lights and anda a loud siren Yes I am talking about a fire engine yet there are many individuals who must not know what a fire engine is and the function it performs in society Trust me on this one the fire engine and the people aboard it are really working for us and it helps them to get to their job sites in a hurry I try and pull over as soon as I see a fire engines engine's lights or hear its siren I think most people do as well But on almost every occasion occasion occa occa- sion ion there is one person who must be driving around in a comatose state completely unaware of their surroundings and the hold up they are arc causing I have seen many fire engines come to a complete stop to allow the straggler who shouldn't be driving to pass by By this time the straggler has usually slowed down enough to realize that they are the only vehicle left on the road except for the big red one They usually get an embarrassed look on their face hoping that nobody they know witnessed what just took place If everyone would pay more attention to driving driving driving dri dri- ving while driving many of these hindrances to public safety could be avoided The other area I would like to touch base on onis onis onis is the courtesy of Utah drivers as they approach a construction zone on the freeway If you have driven anywhere on the freeway this summer you have probably passed by at least a few construction construction construction con con- zones I agree we have some of the finest shovel holders that taxes can buy but that is beside the point It seems that most freeway work requires that two lanes of the interstate be closed As three lanes merge into one it is interesting to watch the future Indy car drivers race to the front only to slam on their brakes to avoid a collision This in turn causes a great chain reaction of brake lights and causes a long delay r 1 V 1 If there were only one Indy racer out there it wouldn't be so bad but we have a lot Dad Indy races his full size pickup truck to the pole position Mom Indy is right there in the Suburban with the 79 liter V V The kids in the Indy family also strive to get to the front as aswell aswell aswell well as the long lost uncle in his semi Anyway all of the racers feel that they have ha-e to win so every car they pass is another point in inthe inthe the race I used to be an Indy racer on Utah's free free- ways but I 1 changed Allowing other to merge in front of you does not make you less of a per per- son In fact the people that merged will usually usually usually usual usual- ly even wave to you They waved because they just barely got out of the way of the Indy rac rac- rac- rac ers So get out of f the way of fire engines and relax when approaching construction zones It will make other drivers think highly of you and make you happy |
