S Carty's call for a boycott of my classes Horizon January 3 sounds like a good way to get my workload down to manageable size Unfortunately his other ideas arc are much less tenable I cannot understand forone for forone forone one thing why he thinks I would find such terms as American African-American unacceptable for they accurately indicate that persons person's point of origin Native American does not for Indians certainly did not originate on this thus continent Nor do I agree that we can cando cando cando do without a generic term for the American Indian Perhaps Mr Carty has time to list each of the more than tribes that inhabited North America in 1492 each time he wishes wish wish- es to refer to them as a group but tome to tome tome me life is too short for that I call them Indians and assume my listener listen listen- er understands something of the common features that link them generically as well as their cultural diversity If Carty will reread my letter letter letter let let- ter I l think he will agree that his allegation allegation allegation alle alle- gation that I am trying to perpetuate 1 previous hatred and lies is most unfair Rather I am trying to prevent the proliferation of lies such as that represented by the term Native American We already have enough inaccuracies lets let's not add to the list Finally I 1 should like to thank the Horizon editorial staff and its readers for their indulgence in allowing Sherrick Carty and myself to discuss publicly our contrasting views Such exchanges both inside and outside of the classroom arc are a hallmark of higher Gary Cary Topping Assistant Professor of History |
