Show Student Senate Pushes for Resolution on Payment for Parking Ticket Fees By Sara Nelson News Editor The Student Senate is working on a resolution to give students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents the option to perform community community community service as payment for parking ticket fees The Student Senate hopes to present present present pre pre- sent it to President Budd and the vice presidents as soon as possible If they pass the resolution students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents who want to waive a 10 parking parking parking park park- ing ticket fee would be required to perform 3 hours of community ser ser- ser ser- vice In order to waive a 20 fee a student student student stu stu- stu- stu dent would be required to perform 5 hours of community service y r- r Senators Tuttle Monson Barnes and Fabrizio are the main supporters of this resolution They feel that completing 3 hours of community service would be as much of a deterrent to parking illegally illegally illegally ille ille- gally as paying for the parking ticket fee The resolution states that the average average average aver aver- age students make approximately 6 an hour For a student to waive the 10 I 0 parking ticket fee they would lose 8 In wages Based on the same approximations dons a student would lose 10 lOin in wages to waive a 20 fee As of now students who receive a parking ticket do not have any other option than paying the debt t t.- t. 1 r. r io b Because of the financial demands placed on students supporters of the resolution feel that having only one option is unfair to students They feel that if the resolution is passed students will benefit by having having having hav hav- ing more than one option as payment for a parking ticket fee Community service is already established in Utah Law as an appropriate appropriate appropriate means where law breakers can work out their grievances with the state This bill would establish community community community service as an appropriate way for students to work out their debt with the school This program will utilize the Emma Lou Thayne Community 7 r S itc 4 o U If Service Center and will not have to hire anybody to supervise students who wish to provide community community community com com- service The program will support an integral integral integral inte inte- gral purpose of the center which is t to direct students' students efforts towards providing community ser ser- ser ser- vice The Service Center has committed commit commit- ted that they would be willing to facilitate students in directing their efforts without having to increase their budget The resolution also states that parking ticket fees cannot be counted as revenue therefore cannot lose or make any money with this bill r t at i I.
