Show University Center offers Bachelors of Nursing By Jake Managing Editor Salt Lake Community College nursing students wishing to continue their education beyond an associates degree may now do so through a new University Center program The University Center of Bachelors of Nursing Program is a cooperative venture between the University of Utah and Students will be enrolled in the U of ofU's ofUs ofUs ofU's ofUs ofU's Us U's College of Nursing but will not have to leave the cozy atmosphere of to complete their BS This program affords our students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents an opportunity of having a seamless enrollment into a Baccalaureate program said Helen Sheppard division chair of Health Sciences Classes will begin this fall with 14 students enrolled in the program but is designed to admit up to 20 students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents each year The course will be taught by U of U faculty at sites The complete course will run for five quarters with about 10 hours per quarter Classes will be held at the South City Campus in the nursing laboratory facility They will be held late afternoon evening and weekends weekends weekends week week- ends to accommodate working students students' students students' students students' stu stu- stu- stu dents' dents schedules Helen U of U associate professor in the College of Nursing said the program will build on the students' students associate degree With this program we will be focusing more in-depth in on issues of leadership management and care in alternative clinical practice sites said University Center Director Kathy Hurd said she initiated ed the discussion of the joint program program program pro pro- gram because nursing students wanted wanted wanted want want- ed to keep ties with the Community College This is a collaborative effort to help students continue their education education education tion without having to be placed on a along along along long wait list said Hurd She also said that due to shifting responsibilities ties in the health care environment nurses are needing to o be more autonomous Sheppard said she supports the new program because students who earn a bachelors degree usually acquire more skills in critical 5 see Nursing pg Nursing COil continued till from pg 1 thinking and decision making She said it also gives them a better understanding understanding understanding under under- standing of the overall health care environment She said this new program comes at a good time when there is a strong professional movement to make the Registered Nurse a minimum of a bachelors degree to tobe tobe tobe be on a professional nursing level Hurd said that the U of U and are currently investigating other year four-year degree ties The University Center program already offers three bachelors bachelor's degree programs with Weber State and three masters master's programs with Utah State |
