Show 1 Between en What What-J What The Difference V H I w V I We Want and What We Get Human Side By Diane Cashel Director Alcohol Drug Education Our wants seem so simple and most people can get most of the things that they want For example students want to get getan getan getan an education have fun create memories memories memories mem mem- ories make good friends start a relationship relationship relationship rela rela- and feel good about them them- sel selves ves But these things do not happen automatically students must make conscious choices designed to get them what they want Sometimes the choices students make concerning alcohol and other drugs result in getting them exactly what they dont don't want Students know they have to adapt their behavior when their choices hurt their academics when their choices result in events that aren t fun or memories that are not fond If friendships and relationships are important to students and their bad choices have put a strain on their relationships then they need to evaluate evaluate evaluate eval eval- their decisions Sometimes students need to adapt their choices to better get what they want Confrontation is such a positive thing in changing bad decisions After students know what they want they can do what they know they must to get it Many times when the Alco Alco- hol Drug Program tries to educate students the response we get is I know that and it is usually true Most people know they shouldn't drink and drive most people know the hazards of unprotected sex Yet every week on our campus students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents do what they know they shouldn't do There is a difference between what they know and what they do The consequences of one day of being stupid can haunt students their families friends and even the community for a long time Students must realize they are worth the effort to take care of themselves ves When students act stupidly because because because be be- cause of peer pressure when they let people talk them into doing things they are not being true to them them- selves However one bad decision need not ruin everything When students make mistakes they need to correct the problem challenge themselves to do better recognize recognize recognize rec rec- rec- rec that they are still growing and need improvement and strengthen their resolve to move forward When we decide who we truly want to be we know what we need to do When we start doing what we know we need to do we get what we want |
