| Show BYU Too Much for Bruins Again Cougars end season for the second straight year as the Bruins continue to impress officials teams By Eric Bresee Bruins Soccer Beat Writer In the end BYUs BYU's juniors and seniors proved too much for the freshmen and sophomores of Salt Lake Community College The mens men's soccer club advanced to the semifinals of the National Recreation Intramural-Recreation Sports Association National Nation Nation- al Tournament But the Bruins ran into a in the form of the two-time two defending champion BYU Cougars who defeated the Bruins 5 0 O. In my seven years of coaching that was th the worst defeat Bruins Coach Enrique Velasquez said They BYU took it to us It was the second time in three years the Bruins advanced to the semifinals of the tournament and the second year in a row the Cougars eliminated Last year the Cougars defeated the Bruins 2 1 in the quarterfinals of the tournament more talented and they're faster said Velasquez The Bruins hung with the Cougars for the first 15 minutes of the game until BYU converted a turnover into a 1 0 lead The goal virtually assured the Bruins a defeated as BYU gave up only two goals in the entire game 6 tournament both in pool play BYU went on to win the National Championship over Texas Tech 4 The Bruins ended the Georgia tournament with a 2 1 record and finished in the top four teams in the nation Although the major hardware escaped the Bruins grasp they did not come home empty won the tournament award for best sportsmanship while Tommy Morse and Dave Huber were named to the Tournament All-Tournament team For more see page 6 Bruin Tourney Results Texas Tech 1 0 loss Clemson 3 1 win Georgia 2 tie Quarterfinals Colorado St. St 3 2 win wine Semifinals BYU 5 0 loss game game won in Shootout Men Make Run at Title Lose in Semis Eric Bresee was this weekend reporting on the mens men's and women's national soccer club tournament Here are the summaries and highlights highlights highlights high high- lights of this weekends weekend's mens men's soccer action The men lost in the semifinals semifinals semifinals nals to eventual champion BYU The men won three and lost two B. B By Eric Bresee Soccer Beat Writer vs Colorado State Before losing to BYU in the semifinal round the Bruins played perhaps their most exciting game in inthe inthe inthe the programs history in the quarter quarter- finals The Bruins defeated the Colorado Colorado Colorado Col Col- orado State Rams 3 2 in a Shootout to advance to the final four The Rams jumped out to a 1 0 lead early in the first half but midfielder midfielder midfielder mid mid- fielder Mike Esquivel lobbed a shot towards the Rams goal and it was deflected in by a defender to tie the game Colorado State retook the lead 18 minutes into the second half but the lead didn't last long as Jeff Breinholt took a tremendous feed from Jesus Flores and netted his iz only goal of the tournament i Breinholt's goal tied the game at 2 where it would stay until the end of regulation play The teams played two scoreless minute five-minute overtimes that lead up to the best- best of-five of Shootout Things didn't get interesting until Flores' Flores attempt was stopped The game the tournament and the season rested on Bruins keeper Kirk Flowers' Flowers shoulders Flowers was beaten soundly on three of the Rams previous four attempts but he blocked the he shot and sent the shootout into the sudden sudden sudden sud sud- den death phase Kyle Lopez was the Bruins first shooter in sudden death He lined up and took his patented yard 10 run and blasted the ball to the back backof backof backof of the net As the shooter lined up Flowers knew his attempt to keep the shootout alive would be futile I looked at him and I knew where he was going said Flowers A shootout is either guess or react If you guess you might get there quicker but if you react you'll go the right way Flowers' Flowers stop unleashed a chaotic scene as the team piled on Flowers for extending the Bruins season With the exciting victory Brigham Young was up next for Salt Lake in the semifinals vs Texas Tech The Bruins were shocked by the Red Raiders of Texas Tech in the first game of pool play 1 The setback put the Bruins behind the eight-ball eight as they didn't record a point in the first game Late in the game the Bruins had several chances to tie the game but when a Flores kick rolled wide right the Bruins were doomed We played nervous said Velasquez I think we played not notto notto notto to lose played poorly in the first half but came back strong in the second The Bruins increased the pressure and intensity but failed to find the back of the thc net Velasquez attributed the play to the youth and inexperience of the team The team also seemed to be lacking confidence in the first half according to Advisor Jim Hampton The Texas Tech victory was the first of the tournament for the Bru Bru- ins It was then onto the University ty of Clemson Tigers vs Clemson The Bruins needed to beat the Clemson Tigers to stay in the hunt for a berth to the championship bracket found the fire in the belly as they pasted the Tigers 3 Edgar Lanz led the charge as he recorded the Bruins first goal of the tournament halfway through the first half Clemson struck back quickly and tied the game at 1 at the half But took the game over as Flores and Erich Fleischel scored less than eight minutes apart for the Bruins We finally begun to move the ball and play the way we were capable of playing said Velasquez I thought we started second guessing ourselves This is isa isa isa a young team We need to mature The last game of pool play for Salt Lake was finally here against the University of Georgia vs Georgia In order to get to the single- single elimination tournament the Bruins needed to beat the Georgia Bull Bull- dogs in their last game of pool play Not knowing what was happening happening happening happen happen- ing in the pivotal Texas Tech-Clem- Tech son game accentuated the need Georgia struck first but Esquivel Esquiv Esquiv- el tied the game when he lifted a ashot ashot ashot shot over the Bulldog keeper Then when the Bruins needed a goal the most Lopez took great feed from Brian and after some fancy footwork Lopez netted his first goal of the ment I opened my eyes on accident Lopez joked after the game Moments later the Burins had a chance to put the game out of reach as the Bulldogs were called for a hand-ball hand in the box that resulted in ina a penalty kick Lopez took the kick but failed to convert The stop gave Georgia some momentum as they controlled the final few minutes and were able to tie the game at 2 The game would end in a tie but luckily for the Bruins Texas Tech defeated Clemson 3 0 to knock the Tigers out of the tournament and give the Bruins their fourth straight appearance in the quarterfinal round The Bruins ended the regular season undefeated in region play The semifinal loss constituted Salt Lakes Lake's second loss in three years inthe inthe in inthe the semifinal round of the National Club Tournament BYU beat Texas Tech 4 0 in the championship Both losses were to Texas Tech and BYU which soothed Coach Velasquez's ego a Ii little bit |
