R k o T 1 By Dee Dee Lobato Human Side So what is self esteem We hear so much talk about self esteem Self esteem is the experience experience experience of being worthy of happiness happiness happiness happi happi- ness The basic challenges of life include being able to earn a living and take independent care of ourselves in the environment in which we live We need to develop and maintain a view of ourselves But what does it all mean There are a variety of ways to think about ourselves Two of the most widely used terms are self concept and self esteem Self esteem generally refers to how we feel about or how we value ourselves Self concept can refer to the general idea we have of ourselves and self esteem can refer to particular measures about the components of self concept Positive self esteem according to Nathaniel Branden PhD noted author is the immune system of the spirit helping an individual face life problems and bounce back from adversity That is why we talk so much about self esteem to our adolescents because of the turbulence of teenage years It is just as important tant in our adult years We often struggle with the question how can we build a persons person's self esteem The process is simple but the implementation implementation implementation is difficult Self esteem is built upon the experience of success Think of it in a circular way When individuals individuals indi indi- individuals experience success we grow in self confidence As self confidence grows we feel empowered to face new chal chal- lenges As we succeed in confronting confronting confronting con con- fronting each challenge we develop the capacity to cope with whatever life throws our way That feeling leads to further growth of self confidence self reliance and self esteem As students educators and parents the more successes we can build into our own and other peoples' peoples learning experiences that adds to that persons capacity to feel sufficient self-sufficient thus more opportunities opportunities' we will willy have to increase their self esteem As adults we need successes too We need to provide ourselves ourselves our our- ourselves selves with the opportunities to learn and to feel good about what we are doing The art of positive thinking being able to be optimistic optimistic optimistic seeing the world as an act of kindness As we work to achieve a more healthier self esteem the results could be in having less stress anxiety and other emotional dilemmas You will tend to enjoy life more and perform better too |
