| Show Colin Ross at University of Utah with Utah Pipe Band By Amanda Nielson Entertainment Editor Colin Ross with the Utah Pipe Band preformed a unique blend of Scottish and Irish music on Saturday at University of Utah Fine Arts Auditorium The Utah Pipe Band opened the concert with a few familiar song such as Danny Boy and Amazing Grace The performance of Amazing Grace electrified the audience when heralding trumpets and violinists joined with the Utah Pipe Band aswell as aswell aswell well as a vocalist Also with the Band were some Scottish Highland dancers ing the Sword Dance and the Highland Fling These dances are traditional Scottish dances usually preformed by men When they were going to battle they would do a Sword Dance before and if they kicked the sword they would lose the battle if not they would win If they won the battle they would dance the Highland Fling as a victory dance The Utah Pipe Band was formed e 11 I i- i I 1 IF I iI f I r 0 jO i t. t or o. o J I Photo courtesy of Internet small pi pes used in folk and other types of music in 1937 by Scottish immigrants that came to the Salt Lake Valley It is the oldest continuous Bagpipe Band in inthe inthe inthe the Western United States Three generations of pipers are represented in this band This band represents Utah in piping piping piping pip pip- ing competitions throughout California Arizona Colorado Nevada and Oregon Since 1976 the band has won numerous piping awards including the 1997 Western United Stated Pipe Band Association Champions in their Following the Utah Pipe Band was Salt Lakes Lake's own Celtic sounding group called The was a storyteller in the ancient courts of Irelands Ireland's medieval kings He was responsible collecting and preserving the traditions and story of the kingdom Shan aha is made up of four talented talented talented tal tal- musicians one of which is Andrew Morrill who is also the Pipe Major of the Utah Pipe Band This group uses a variety of instruments including the Scottish lowland pipes whistle fiddle guitar flute and hammered dulcimer which resembled a drum The Scottish lowland pipes are smaller and quite the a traditional Scottish bagpipe The sound is made by hand pumping the bag like a billow billow billow bil bil- low instead of blowing in the bag It also has an indoor sound where the bagpipes are an outdoor instrument has been entertaining for Utah audiences since 1994 They now have a CD out called Trip to Ballymena The sound of this band is quite similar to the back background background background ground music of the movie Titanic We learned the secret of just what a Scotsman wears under his kilt but we were sworn to secrecy Men just dont don't know how to sit in a kilt The honored guest was Colin Ross He has made bagpipes his life He makes them sells them plays them and teaches others how to play them In college Ross began to take interest in the pipes Since then he has made small pipes and also Scottish small pipes for over 30 years years Ross is one of about 12 men in the world who currently make theses unique English pipes Ross has toured all allover over Europe Australia Canada and United States Currently he is a resident of Whitley Bay England he also has a awaiting awaiting W waiting list fist of orders for his hand handmade handmade handmade made pipes For more information about upcoming events contact Jim Barclay at |
