Show T Thayne ia a ne neen enter en er Serves e es est t the e Community By Lee Hall Contributing Writer The Emma Lou Thayne Center encourages students faculty staff and alumni to serve in the Our main focus is education tion and literacy said Laura a secretary at the Thayne Center also said they recruit students to work in programs programs programs pro pro- grams that promote literacy Most i of the recruits come from classes classes' where instructors make it part of the curriculum This is called service service service ser vice learning Service learning is a huge thing on campus said Liz Gaitan education and literacy literacy literacy liter liter- acy coordinator said most service learning students have a good atti atti- tude Weve never had anyone say sayI sayI I I cant can't do it everyone gets involved Gaitan said Gaitan added the Thayne CenI Center Center Center Cen Cen- ter needs I volunteers more than anything The he Center is currently involved in a program called America Reads started in 1995 96 At the time The legislature felt children weren't reading at grade level leyel Gaitan said Gaitan stated the program requires college students These students work with kindergarten kindergarten kinder- kinder r garten through third grade stu stu- stu- stu dents They work fro from four to 20 hours a week Our goal is to promote literacy and especially family Gaitan The Thayne Center started in 1994 as the Community Service Center In the Fall of 1996 it was renamed after Emma Lou Thayne a prominent poet writer and peacemaker in the community |
