Show Student Frustrated By Teaching Methods And Lack of Support And Lack of Professional Faculty I have been a student at Salt Lake Community College for four years Overall I have been satisfied satisfied satisfied satis satis- fied with the education offered at until winter quarter 1995 This is when I had Economics with Bob Based upon the stories that has told throughout the quarter it is obvious that he has vast experience in economics However having experience in the field does not mean that he can effectively teach the subject It has been an extremely extremely extremely ex ex- frustrating quarter for me and I know for several others in my class There has been an overwhelming overwhelm overwhelm- ing negative atmosphere in the class class- room This atmosphere comes from the lack of professionalism that projects in the class class- room His lessons always seem unprepared unprepared unprepared un un- un- un prepared and unstructured When students ask questions he scrambles to locate answers He has given quizzes that are completely completely completely com com- different than what he said they would be About three weeks ago I had a confrontation with The confrontation was brought upon by a comment that I made while taking one of his quizzes I made the comment comment comment com com- ment that this quiz sucks This caused to go off in class and display pure absence of Although I should not have made the comment it was handled handled handled han han- very poorly on part Mr pulled me out of the class in the middle of the quiz and asked to speak to me in his of of- fice and I then discussed discussed discussed dis dis- cussed my frustration with the class and made an attempt to find a different different different differ differ- ent section for me to enroll in Unfortunately Unfortunately Un Un- fortunately there were no other sections sections sections sec sec- sec sec- that would accommodate my schedule After my confrontation with I met with Blair Carruth Carruth Carruth Car- Car ruth business department chairman to discuss my frustration I expressed expressed expressed ex ex- ex- ex pressed to Carruth that I was definitely definitely definitely not the only member of the class that was frustrated with I know this for a fact because I have talked about this with other members of my class Carruth was very political and told me that he would discuss my frustrations with I suggested to Carruth that he sit in inon inon inon on a class and perform an end of quarter student evaluation Neither of which were done I can understand that Carruth needs to ensure that is treated fairly and that he cannot react hastily based upon one students student's comments However I know that at least one other student in the class approached Carruth to discuss his frustration with teaching methods Now with two and possibly more students there are only about 8 10 in the class approaching Carruth I would think that would give Carruth enough basis to initiate a teacher evaluation This did not occur How does it come to pass that several students display extreme frustration with a teacher and nothing nothing nothing noth noth- ing is done to gather information from the students about the teacher How does intend to maintain a high quality education when nothing nothing nothing noth noth- ing is done to ensure that high quality quality quality ity teachers are on staff These are two questions that remain unan unan- I would hope that in quarters to come more is done to prevent the same type of situation from happen happen- ing I would also hope that when 20 percent of a class communicates frustration to a department chairman that the department chairman acts upon these comments LeMonte Monte Gregory General Studies Major |
