Show Barrier Busters Club j f starts two new programs rams Tamara Begue Contributing Writer HO are the Barrier WHO VY Busters Th They ey are members of club for forthe forthe forthe the disabled and are committed committed committed com com- to creating increased social interaction between the disabled and bodied able-bodied population Just recently they started two new programs on campus to further further further fur fur- ther this goal The first project was accomplished accomplished accomplished ac ac- ac- ac with the help of the college which donated in matching funds to the club This money was used to buy a large supply of notebooks called Take a Note These notebooks are filled with lined paper and be be- L hind each paper is a carbon Students who attend classes with deaf students can take notes and give the copy to the deaf person in class These books were expensive for the club to purchase per box and were distributed carefully throughout campus Barrier Busters also sent Craig Foreman recreation director at to a two day workshop for recreation professionals sponsored by Ability of Utah The workshops gave classes on how to expand recreation programs to include the dis dis- dis- dis This will hopefully be implemented on the campus in the future A support group is also being organized The group 4 will develop self-esteem self and skill development for everything everything everything every every- thing from personal relationships relationships relationships relation relation- ships to test studying The group hopes to hold a staff sensitivity meeting and workshops for faculty and staff The percentage of handicapped handicapped handicapped hand hand- students at is 10 larger than any other campus in Utah The largest number are emotionally disabled disabled disabled dis dis- dis- dis ranging from learning disabilities to severe depres depres- sion Anyone interested in attending attending attending at at- tending the above mentioned programs may contact Cathy Shank at for further information |
