Show Letters to the Editor Our readers respond i ft 7 Student fees only for academic enhancement Dear Editor winter mid-winter DURING D quarter the Horizon published an editorial which questioned the performance of the College Activities Board CAB Since that time there has been many rebuttals rebuttals rebuttals rebut rebut- written condemning the Horizon for being critical of the CAB The last one of these letters April 11 issue was written by a student who went out of his way to mention mention mention men men- tion he was not a member of the CAB but defended their handling of activities I Ido Ido Ido do not know this student but after reading his editorial I wondered if he has any personal personal personal per per- friends who are members members mem mem- bers of the CAB 1 Though I do not agree with every opinion of the Horizon staff I say hats off to the Horizon for having the guts to speak up and question student government and school administration If members of the CAB and other student officers can not take a little heat then I have a suggestion Why dont don't they all go back to high school where being a successful member of student government government government govern govern- ment is more a matter of riding the wave of personal popularity rather than of ones one's performance A major point of the CAB issue seems to be the large difference in the age of students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents at I sympathize with the CABs CAB's problem of seeing to the needs of students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents who range in age from 18 to over 50 years old However what is really at issue here is not the need for a range of activities that fits the particular interests of every student age group but rather it is really an issue of mentality and student rights In other words what right does the CAB have in spending spending spending spend spend- ing student for activities activities activities ac ac- ac- ac that do not benefit all the students but just cater to toa a particular age or interest group Of course when entering college we assume that many of the fees we pay will not always go directly to our own personal education but will also help meet the costs of others students educational needs also I repeat educational educational educational needs This is not to say that all activities that are not directly related to academic or intellectual growth are not also important But what it does mean is that no student should be forced to pay for the non-academic non activities of another student I do not mind paying student student student stu stu- stu- stu dent fees each quarter that go toward another students academic enhancement Many activities at do further academic vocational and intellectual enrichment such as guest speakers debates the student newspaper student support groups etc Other activities such as dances dating games school sponsored family outings outings outings out out- ings etc do not have a direct academic relationship Non Nonacademic Nonacademic Nonacademic academic activities also have havea a place but they cater to the special non-academic non interests interests interests inter inter- ests of small groups Most students are here to get an education Many students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents are here to get an education and have a good time and unfortunately others are here just to have a good time We students who have come for an education do not mind that there are those out there who want to have fun at school also Just dont don't make us pay for your fun I suggest that the CAB not use any student monies for non-academic non activities These monies should be returned to the students Then each student can pay to enter the planned nonacademic nonacademic nonacademic non- non academic activities he or she chooses If the CAB does not feel they can acquire sufficient sufficient dent funds from entrance fees to offset the cost of a non-academic non activity then I would suggest it is not worth having In leaving this college to pursue other educational or employment goals it will be important to each of us how employers and other institutions institutions institutions of higher education view and esteem the worth of ofa a degree or certificate from Im I'm continually impressed impressed impressed im im- im- im pressed by the quality of education I have received at This is mainly due to the excellent faculty Many of the classes I have taken here have been taught by a PhD Perhaps the CAB should remember that the type of activities activities activities ac ac- ac- ac it plans also effects the image and reputation of this institution Filing the calendar with pseudo-high pseudo school activities certainly does nothing to help the prestige of Roland Fitts |
