Show Graduating apprentice honored at t tT HP T annual Old Timers banquet Jack Foriska Staff Writer The purpose of the banquet is so the old timers timers' can tan meet the hew i blood in the union and share their experiences with the graduating ing apprentices said Jay Dunham the banquet banquet banquet ban ban- chairman Saturday April 22 was once again the site for the State Carpenters Union Old Timers Banquet It is an affair where retired carpenters get together to renew old acquaintances acquaintances acquaintances and to honor graduates of Union Apprenticeship Program However Larry Batemans Bateman's presence at the luncheon was not only to nob hob-nob with old timers but to collect a large trophy and a cash prize for winning the contest The contest is a state wide competition for aspiring young carpenters after they finish their apprenticeship and are arc ready to move on to journeyman status In order to complete an apprenticeship beginning carpenters must finish a four year program of classroom work coupled with eight thousand hours of on the job training At the completion of the program the students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents are arc given a comprehensive written examination examination examination ex ex- that covers classroom material from the previous four years Then they are arc given n a manipulative test where they are required required required re re- re- re to build a set of stairs layout roof rafters and build a saw-horse saw project The field is then narrowed down to three finalists based on the highest scores The finalists then compete in the last phase of the competition The finalists arc are then given a blueprint and must construct a complex project In this case a footbridge with ramps stairs and a hand rail raili all built with complex miter cuts and dadoes that require use of all of the participants participants participants par par- skills and knowledge The three finalists i in the contest were we're Larry Bateman Julian Lopez and Keith Eyre Lyre with Larry emerging as the winner Larry is a South Salt Lake resident and a member of Local Congratulations to all the gr graduates of the Apprenticeship program |
