Show 1988 Produces First Graduates in Three Programs By Cindy Aznoe In addition to being first class the graduating class of 1988 is a class of firsts Among its members are the first to graduate with degrees in Manufacturing Technology Criminal Justice and the first recipient of the Associate of Arts degree Norman W. W Sackett will be the first recipient of an AS degree in Manufacturing Technology According to Wayne Crossen division chair of computer systems the Manufacturing T Technology program was begun in the fall of 1986 It is designed to be a year two-year transfer degree leading to a bachelors bachelor's degree in Manufacturing Engineering Technology worked closely with BYU Weber State and to assure that the program would be fully with their engineering pro pro- grams The program is planned to offer the student a background in machining electronics manufacturing processes and tool operations Sackett is the quintessential traditional traditional non student married father of four boys and employed full He has been a student at since September 1984 Prior to entering the Manufacturing Technology program Sackett was in Pre Engineering He began the new program in the spring of 1987 because he felt the curriculum was less grueling and was better suited to meet his needs and interests According to Sackett he chose to attend because of the s smaller aller class sizes and the reduced cost of tuition as compared to the larger state tate schools He has attended business classes at the U. U of U. U and LOS Business College Sackett served on the committee which helped design the Manufacturing ing Technology program and feels that it meets the needs of students as they prepare for futures in in industry Upon completing his degree at Sackett plans to transfer to Weber State to finish his bachelors bachelor's degree in Manufacturing Engineering Technology He hopes to commute from his home in the Salt Lake valley Sackett said he plans to graduate from Weber in June 1991 In addition to being a student Sackett works time full-time at the Welfare Square Cannery as a cannery operator His job is to run the pressure cooker keep the machines on-line on and to assure that the cooking processes processes processes pro pro- are done correctly Four students have completed the course of study necessary to earn degrees in Criminal Justice They will be the first to receive degrees in this program The program was previously offered as Law Enforcement However the program was changed to coincide with a similar program at Weber State According to George Vanderwater continuing education the Criminal Justice program is designed to be a year two transfer program Currently Weber State is the only state institution offering a major in Criminal Just Justice ce The U. U of U U. U offers a minor in Criminology Weber State awards a a. a bachelors bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice with a choice of three areas of emphasis Corrections and Probations Law Enforcement Enforcement En En- for ement and Forensics There are two d degrees grees curr currently offered in the program Associate of Science and Associate of Applied Science The AS degree may be transferred directly to the Weber State program in lieu of the first two years the A. A AAS AS is designed solely for certification as as a year two-year pro pro- gram Four students will be the first to receive degrees under the new program designation James J. J Brusatto Joseph A. A Iovino lovino Stefanie Wimmer and Sandra D. D Fitch Fitch will receive an AAS and the others will receive their AS degrees James J. J Brusatto will be completing his program and plans to apply for fora a position with a local police agency He may complete his bachelors bachelor's degree in the future Joseph A. A Iovino lovino is a detective with the West Valley Police Department working primarily in burglary and fraud He came to the Criminal Justice program to enhance his career in law enforcement Prior to entering the program he had received credit at the U. U of U. U and Penn State According to Iovino lovino the classes he took at were comparable to those offered at the larger institutions In fact he said that many of the instructors are exceptionally good He stated that L. L G. G Bingham in particular was first rate Iovino lovino said that Bingham is a highly respected lawyer in criminal law and that police officers around the state would dread having to go up against him himin in court Having such an instructor on campus is a big plus for the program program program pro pro- gram according to Iovino lovino After completing his studies at Iovino lovino plans to transfer to Weber State majoring in Criminal Justice with an emphasis in Law Enforcement He hopes to be able to use his bachelors bachelor's degree from Weber to gain employment with the FBI or another government agency Stefanie Wimmer has been attending for two years having come cometo to the campus directly from high school She chose to attend because it was convenient had lower tuition and was the only school in inthe inthe inthe the Salt Lake Valley offering the Criminal Justice degree Wimmer said she plans to attend Weber State in the fall majoring in Criminal Justice with an emphasis in Law Enforcement After receiving her bachelors bachelor's degree she will either go into law enforcement or possibly enter law school According to Vanderwater Sandra Fitch will be completing the AAS degree program and plans to continue the work necessary to complete the requirements for the AS in the future Michael G. G Peterson completed his Associate of Arts degree winter quarter making him the first to c complete th the requirements for the new degree Prior to tp Fall Quarter 1987 this degree was was not not offered on the campus When contacted for an interview concerning his accomplishment Peterson stated that he was unaware that he was the first recipient of the AA degree He is now a student at the University of Utah majoring in Organizational Communications and plans to graduate with a BA in about 18 months Peterson stated that he did not have to complete his language requirements requirements requirements re re- for the AA degree at because he was able to transfer those credits from B. B BYU YU He attended for a total of four quarters |
