D Curtis 0 Staff Writer Steve Nebraska is the greatest baseball player that ever lived Hes He's also slightly mentally disturbed He Heis is discovered playing baseball in 7 Mexico by a below average average talent i scout Al AI 0 played by Albert t. t Brooks is willing to overlook Nebraska's mental weaknesses because because be be- cause of his tremendous talent talen So he takes him to New York to play for the Yankees Nebraska who is a 0 victim of his past is set to be b a victim victim vic vic- tim tun of his promising baseball future in the Hollywood version of this years year's World Series called The Scout The Scout is a sports movie that like other good sports sports movies focuses on its characters and uses athletics as a setting The problem with this film is that it focuses on the wrong characters What we dont don't see in the film is more interesting interesting inter inter- esting than what we do see believes that Nebraska is his ticket to the big time but winds up becoming a father figure for the young talent instead Per Per- colo cobo is on the greedy side but is kind hearted and winds up getting Nebraska into mental therapy Their relationship and Nebraska's therapy create a lot of interest Dianne Wiest plays the psychologist Dr Aaron who is evaluating Nebraska The initial therapy session is captivating and it loo looks as if we will get some insight into who Steve Nebraska is and where he comes from but this never happens We are told Nebraska is still in therapy and we hear that he is js improving but we never see it Instead we watch as deals with Yankee management and the press and soon the ending is upon us We never get a handle on what made Nebraska the interesting interesting interesting inter inter- esting and likable person he is Where did his mental illness come from Where is his family How is he so great at baseball The film teases us by presenting all those questions but never answering them Instead it gives us Nebraska's baseball performance which we dont don't really care about He is so great at baseball that we arent aren't worried about the outcome anyway The ending does manage a few surprises and creates some good suspense but cant can't overcome what is missing It delivers Nebraska the baseball player but the real interest lies in hi Nebraska the player The film features some real baseball people like George Keith Hernandez Ozzie Smith and Bob Tewksbury all playing themselves It is enjoy is-enjoy- enjoy enjoyable able but not quite satisfying Grade B- B 4 I J t u. u f 0 i It J 0 t r is rt w N k r 4 d 0 via bw v tP i 1 A 1 it 1 ii Ji 1 1 i n w f 1 t 1 i p J f i ii il 1 6 f r l P 4 15 1 i 4 g j 1 i 1 jj I I II t f l j f 1 i I I I 1 I i. i I jo j i I f I I I 1 1 I j I.
