Show Student Agrees Television Too Violent US U.S. Attorney Generals General's Regulation Not Constitutional Answer If Dear Editor THE violence sex drugs and profanity that people are exposed to when they turn on the television is ridiculous A person cannot even turn on the television during time prime-time without seeing some form of moral misconduct However government regulation is not the answer Does our government have the right to intervene intervene intervene in in- and tell Hollywood what is acceptable acceptable acceptable accept accept- able and not acceptable According to United States Attorney General Janet Reno our government does have the right This is not only a violation of the constitution the document document document docu docu- ment the Reno is supposed to defend and base her judgments on but it also is a violation of the principles our country was founded upon Which is greater The First Amendment right to free speech or the societal right to be protected from harmful pro programming g I feel it is the First Amendment It guarantees guarantees guarantees guaran guaran- tees us the right to express ourselves in a variety of avenues It guarantees me the right to write this article and not be prosecuted by bythe bythe bythe the government It guarantees you the right to read this newspaper It guarantees the television industry the right to portray life as they see it Are we going to allow our government to start putting exceptions to the rule If we do then let me issue this warning wanting this is just the beginning Next the government wont won't allow us to have firearms because it promotes violence Then our right of not riot guilty until proven inno innocent ent will be taken away if we weare we weare weare are suspected of f crimes crimes against against the state state and it will go on and onDo onDo on Do we need to be protected from harmful harmful harmful harm harm- ful programming That statement sounds like something out of communist literature We need to be protected from the nuclear bomb we do not need to be protected from the right to choose what we view on television Yes the television industry needs to tame down its portrayal of life After all is life really as they portray it Is it so violent Are drugs as rampant as the show Is sex really that that great great Yes our children the leaders of tomorrow tomorrow tomorrow tomor tomor- row are getting a warped picture of life Yes it is having haying a negative effect on society However we as citizens need to take care of the problem Write to the television industry and tell them that the extreme violence sex drugs and profanity is unacceptable Turn off the television if there is nothing suitable for your children to watch Have rallies and lectures Overall let the television industry know that you are unhappy Our government does not have right to mandate or limit what we watch It is un un- un- un constitutional Are we going to allow them to start limiting our rights for the good of the people After all are we Americans or orare orare orare are we Communists Stephanie Lindsay education |
