Show Concert review The Bouncing Souls Hardcore energy getting stronger Dave pave Hansen Arts Entertainment Editor HAT doesn't kill us only WHAT makes us stronger and No room for apathy are the slogans of the Bouncing Souls slogans they seem to live and write in lyric The Souls are a Jast paced fast paced punk funk metal ball of energy from New Jersey rolling on their first tour with headlining group Lifetime The venue was Pioneer Hall Halla a small historical church located located located lo lo- lo- lo on South and 1150 West The average age of the con goers concert goers ert-goers that filled the hall was around 18 Two local bands performed before the Souls bounced on stage Before they performed the Souls seemed pretty down to earth and pretty darn cool even mellow But mellow was far from what was to come Tracks from their song seven-song EP titled The Green Ball Crew Crew of which they had to save borrow and beg loved- loved ones for funds to produce by themselves were performed with a raw energy and intriguing intriguing intriguing ing force that quite literally blew the other bands onto a of entertainment What made the Souls so entertaining was the blend of a punk metal grunge and funk style wit with tricky tempo changes changes changes chan chan- usually from fast to faster With such songs as Quotes from our famous Movies which they hope to put on a new CD around October October October Oc Oc- Oc- Oc tober they change from hardcore to a light beat and then back to the thrashing they do so well Another enthralling aspect of these Bouncing men is the different charisma and vigorous charm each one of them have Lead singer Greg Attonito was jumping and slouching as ashe ashe ashe he sang and yelled with his shaved head except for a three-and-a-half-foot- three braided long tail rooted from the back backof backof backof of his skull Guitarist Pete looked the most conservative of the group for lack of a better word Drummer hair was dyed green while he worked up a healthy sweat pounding his drum set Bassist Bryan Kienlen looked to be straight out of the Sex Pistols complete with the Bouncing Souls logo man from the album cover tattooed across the whole of his lower back Songs such as Hate and from The liThe Green Ball Crew tackle prevalent issues such as racism and censorship censorship censorship censor censor- ship both of which they are against After the show they were really laid back as they discussed discussed discussed dis dis- dis- dis cussed being on the road the EP and plans for their future We love doing what we are doing now Attonito said We dont don't try to be totally serious on crowd appreciates it when we play hard and see that we have fun doing it When asked what they thought of Utah Attonito said We couldn't have asked for a better crowd It was a cool place to play too LA is kind of critical and straight-edged straight it was good to see the Utah crowd kick kickback kickback kickback back and enjoy the show The Bouncing Souls plan on oncoming oncoming oncoming coming back through Utah around October or November hopefully to promote a new CD They're on the rise they're a do lido donot donot not miss show fans will love They are the souls that bounce f y IM le n a I t Photo cont Katrina contributor Katrina butor Servantes Bryan Kienlen of Boun Bouncing ng Souls lends vocals at the Pioneer Hall concert |
