Show Local canyons offer easy hikes Alison Aliso Thornton Associate Editor ANY shorter and less MANY difficult tr trails ails are found in nearby canyons These trails are perfect for beginning hikers or family outings Picnic areas are available at most trails and if not there is always ground to throw a blanket on Doughnut Falls is located a few miles up Big Cottonwood Cottonwood Cottonwood Cotton- Cotton wood Canyon the turn off offis offis offis is marked by a sign on the road The trail is not steep and takes around 15 minutes to walk and ends at atthe atthe atthe the falls For those feeling more adventurous adventurous adventurous ad ad- venturous the waterfall itself is easily climbed Always climb with extreme caution and be sure of foot and hand holes before taking what could be a fatal step Marys Mary's Lake is located at Brighton Ski Resort also in Big Cottonwood Canyon The trail begins at the bottom of the Marys Mary's ski run and again is clearly marked by a sign This climb is a little more difficult difficult difficult dif dif- dif dif- and takes about 40 minutes The scenery is incredible wildflowers and greenery nearly overtaking the foot- foot path Wildlife such as deer and nd squirrels are easy to spot just off the trail At the end of the trail is a beautiful beautiful ful lake with great fishing No swimming is allowed in inthe inthe inthe the lake Catherines Catherine's Lake is found at the end of the road in Littie Little Little Lit Lit- tle tie Cottonwood Canyon No sign marks this trail but it is found with ease Not many trees are along the route but open pen valleys with unique rock formations and cattails a are e wonderful scenery The top of the trail offers a spectacular view of the lake from above and if not too w weary ary the walk down to the lake takes 10 minutes Salt Lake Overlook trail is found in Millcreek Canyon just past the Millcreek Inn Restaurant This hike is one that has to be worked up to and should not be the first climb of the season An hour or two should be planned for this trail but it itis itis itis is worth the effort The well-traveled well footpath footpath footpath foot foot- path is framed by tall pine trees and lush vegetation A small stream crisscrosses the path in several places and carries just enough water to cool off Dont Don't drink from the stream un water may cause which causes nausea cramping cramping cramping cramp cramp- ing and diarrhea The end of the track is marked by a boulder Lunching Lunching Lunching Lunch Lunch- ing at this spot always is fun eat and enjoy the view of Salt Lake Valley before heading heading heading head head- ing down the trail Several other trails exist in inthe inthe inthe the canyons surrounding the Salt Lake Valley A book of trails and their difficulty can be obtained at any outdoor sports store the visitor information information information mation center or the public library |
