Show Outdoor smokers want some protection from the weather suggest some changes chang s to smoking areas Dear Editor When I came to this college to sign up for classes I found that the campus is now enforcing enforcing enforcing ing the Utah Clean Air Act This really was of no surprise Where I used to work they started having the smokers go outside to smoke also This is not a problem for a smoker just a minor inconvenience The smoke that is usually trapped inside a building near neara a smoking area can be very annoying annoying annoying an an- to a smoker let alone someone who doesn't smoke The company that I worked for Litton Guidance and Control Control Control Con Con- determined that if they had a small enclosure the smokers were happier and there were fewer smokers taking days off sick from being exposed to the cold tempera tempera- tures They went even further at the smokers smoke s request putting putting putting put put- ting in natural gas and large capacity heaters This made having a short break or lunch less of a hazard to our health As a smoker myself and listening listening listening lis lis- lis- lis to the general perspective perspective perspective tive of the smokers I have talked to we are in agreement that no one should be unwillingly unwillingly unwillingly exposed to another's bad habits Especially a habit that d directly affects ones one's health We the smokers would like to have the college consider having at least one area with some kind of a wind break outside outside outside out out- side of each ea building This way we are not directly exposed to the weather This addition will prompt smokers to an in area out of the way of the people who are going in and out of the building The public would not have to go th through rough a cloud of smoke to get to and from the building The smoke will still be drawn from this area due to the fact that it is not a complete complete complete com com- enclosure And the Utah Clean Air Act will still be intact since this is not a room added to the building but a sheltered patio area Many of the areas used for smoking now are already under tinder some type of cover so the addition addition addition addi addi- tion of wind breaks would be beall beall beall all that's needed for an effective protection against the weather Some kind of a tinted comes to mind That shouldn't degrade the aesthetics of the buildings Not rain snow or bitter cold can fully curtail the desire to have a cigarette It would be easier on the smoker to have anarea anarea an anarea area such as this Going to college college college col col- col- col lege should be an opportunity not a potential health hazard for anyone Any consideration given to this suggestion would be greatly appreciated Thank T yon Scott K Done Dolle |
