Show f IiO 1 N Nt t MOn a aw w by by Tammy Cheney Staff Writer 0 you fe feel l tot totally lly lost in D DO your studies Do you need help in deciding which career is right for you Are you feeling stressed-out stressed about life in general If you answered yes to any of the above questions then ON Hunter can help He says For the stressed Hunter to the rescue I Im I'm here My sole objective objective objective tive is to help people to answer their questions and to give them guidance and motivation ON Hunter is a student advisor who emphasizes helping helping help help- ing developmental studies students but who can help students in any area of academics His total of 50 years in education has helped him to acquire the expertise and wisdom needed to advise students who are having problems in In- school with their classes or in choosing a career He helps help students choose the right career by getting to know them as people and then finding out what their options are But Hunter is more than just an academic advisor he heis heis heis is someone students can go to if they are having personal p problems He is willing to spend as much time tim with stu stu- stu- stu dents as they need and if he heis heis heis is not able to help them he can direct them to the proper resources either at the college or in the community Hunter retired from the U of U last June after spending 30 years serving in education Some of the positions he held include dean of the College of Health professor of Health Education professor of Physical cal Education and professor of Recreation While serving in these positions he was responsible in some way for more than doctorate degrees and masters master's degrees He was also responsible responsible responsible sible for the planning and development of the present physical facilities for Campus Recreation and Intercollegiate Intercollegiate Intercollegiate Inter Inter- collegiate Athletics As well as serving in academic capacities Hunter found time timeto timeto timeto to serve as the Assistant Director for the Drug and Alcoholic Alcoholic Alcoholic Al Al- coholic Abuse Program Hunter came to because because because be be- cause he realized that he needed to have focus I needed something to get up for fori something something something some some- thing to help me to feel good he recalls Because he has such a avast avast avast vast background in education and he enjoys working with students he became employed as a student advisor Hunter likes to guide students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents into making their own decisions instead of just telling telling telling tell tell- ing them what they should do He confides The liThe reward I get is the satisfaction of helping someone to resolve something and being able to help s students with their needs He realizes that a lot lotof lotof lotof of students who attend are traditional non-traditional college students and therefore have more obstacles to overcome in obtaining a college degree He can help them to solve the problems they have and to succeed in m making king a better life for themselves Although Hunter has focused on academics academia his experience experience experience ex ex- does not stop there Football basketball track and andfield andfield andfield field and baseball were among his favorite sports in high school and college and he participated in all of them But his involvement didn't end after gra graduation He played professional baseball for four years after college and later served as athletic director and head coach of football basketball and track and field in DeSoto Mo He was also a member of John F. F Kennedys Kennedy's Council on Youth Physical Fitness His varied background along with his likeable and caring personality make Hunter an excellent resource for students who have academic concerns need help helpin in making a career choice or have personal problems they need to talk about b ut t. t F. ti t- t I.
