Show I Governor awards students I MaryAnne Anderegg Staff Writer HE annual State Vocational Vocational Vocational Voca- Voca T THE Excellence Awards Banquet held at honored state secondary secondary secondary dary and secondary post-secondary students who have demonstrated high levels of achievements in their vocational vocational vocational voca voca- fields Two students from were recognized by Gov Norman Bangerter for excellence in their fields Lisa Bailey the 91 1990 president of Delta Epsilon Epsilon Epsilon Ep- Ep silon Chi DEX was honored for her efforts in marketing Bailey is the president of her own company company company com com- pany and was recently elected as Western Regional Vice-President Vice of DEX She took first place in sales representative and management decision- decision making human resources events in state DEX com com- petition Bailey took first place in the nation in the sales representative event Matthew Woolston an electronics major and mem mem- ber of VICA was honored for his efforts in the field of electronics In high school Woolston took first in VICAs VICA's electronic products servicing events He scored an excellent in a technical written test built an electronic kit project and had to trouble-shoot trouble a consumer consumer consumer con con- sumer electronic product He placed fourth in the nation nation nation na na- na- na tion that year in high school VICA competition Woolston took first in instate instate instate state collegiate VICA competitions competitions competitions com com- petitions in the electronic product service event and second in the prepared speech event He will compete compete compete com com- pete nationally for VICA during the summer Bailey and Woolston also received as part of their recognition and award One of the purposes of the award according to speaker Dr Max Lowe staff member for the State Board of Regents is to create a well-trained well citizenry who are able to compete globally in a high tech marketplace According to Bangerter who addressed the winning recipients high technology has added jobs to the Utah economy since 1980 Utah has the second highest increase in the nation nation nation na na- na- na tion in this type of job Bangerter stated that encouraging encouraging encouraging en en- and rewarding advances in high technology technology technology ogy is extremely important beyond the job increases because businesses using it improve their creativity and productivity and therefore their global competitive competitive- ness Bangerter illustrated his point with a message from a Japanese plant manager When asked if his workers were literate the manager replied By whose standards standards standards stand stand- ards Americas America's or Japans Japan's By American standards they're all literate They can read and write By Japanese standards only 85 percent are because they are the ones who can program and competently operate a compu com com- pu puter ter II F I F L |
