Show Activities A leave a lot to be desired Nicki Boodrookas Contributing Writer N the Nov 7 issue of the IN Horizon Eric Larsen wrote a aletter aletter aletter letter to the editor concerning concerning concerning concern concern- ing the lack of CAB activities directed at older students I agree with Mr Larsen and feel that CAB activities focus on one aspect of the college experience experience experience ex ex- and in doing so exclude exclude exclude ex ex- clude large portions of the student population I have attended for two-and-a two half y years ars and every year I ask the same questions questions questions ques ques- Where are the activities that broaden your mind and help with your overall education education education tion Where are the activities that add to your knowledge of contemporary society Where are the lectures and fine arts events that provide insight into other cultures Where is our focus onara on ara academic excellence And finally when did the College Activities Board become the College Entertainment Board I agree that activities which promote fu fun laughter j joking king and having haYing a good time relieve some of the pressure press pressure pres- pres f s sure e that attending school often creates Im I'm not negating negating negating ing the importance of these activities They are a viable part of the cc college experience But one p persons person's fun is often often another persons person's nightmare I watched the Blizzard of of Bucks I witnessed the Mr contest contest contest con con- test and every time I I Isit sit through a Lip Sync contest my worst nightmares come true All these activities had a certain amount of participation tion suggesting that some of you arc are arc enjoying yourselves therefore you would probably ly suggest to me that I simply not attend And I would agree except that I paid my student fees as you did and want yant something for or my my money Since all students pay student student student stu stu- stu- stu dent fees and all students i contribute to the CA CAB budget Im I'm asking for more diversity in offered CAB-offered activities Diversity meaning the inclusion inclusion inclusion in in- of those aforementioned aforementioned aforementioned activities but adding others to provide more of a choice Perhaps a guest speaker discussing the increasing increasing increasing ing number of homeless in uran utan COUtO nave promoted CABs CAB's Dinner at the Homeless Homeless Home Home- Homeless less Shelter sponsored Nov 15 is Perchance a guest speaker discussing Utah's environmental environmental environmental environ environ- mental problems Maybe someone to inform about the growing number of child abuse cases in hi Utah Perhaps a dance or BBQ where th the music played existed five ten twenty years ago And possibly ly CAB could invite speakers like Alberta Henry from the NAACP whose form of speaking speaking speaking speak speak- ing entertains yet delivers a strong message about the community in we live In the past past- pastI I have suggested suggested suggested sug sug- some of these activities to CAB members in all fairness fairness fairness fair fair- ness not this particular quarter but the response usually given refers to a lack of student turnout to the kind of events Im I'm requesting I assert assert assert as as- sert that not only the recent political debates have attracted attracted attracted at at- numerous students aswell as aswell aswell well as faculty but guest speakers have also rallied large numbers Alberta Henry spoke to a full fuli auditorium two years ago concerning human rights and a year later TH TK Bells Bell's audience filled the Oak Room of the College Center when he spoke about Utah's educational system The speech given by Henry was sponsored by the Horizon and Bell was invited by the executive executive executive tive to council n l which includes TI P of Hof of activities I applaud clubs such as BACCHUS and their Red Ribbon Ribbon Ribbon Rib Rib- bon Week the and their educational How to Study For Tests DEX and their recycling day gay Literary Club and their reading by poet laureate Mark Strand Horizon and their political debates most recently the Indian Club with their speakers and event etc Yet CAB barely dropped us a line with an Art J d demonstration and an art show The only thing that redeems them in mv my eves is J J their community service Sub- Sub Santa for-Santa and dinners provided for the hom homeless less My assumption is that CAB is under the impression that students have little or no interest in social issues environmental environmental environmental en en- questions or lectures lectures lectures lec- lec tures that tha t build on our educational training I admit that as consumers we expect our guest speakers to know how to motivate and be provocative enough to make us think But I would argue that students are equally interested interested interested in in- in a broad spectrum of issues whether they be community and national concerns concerns concerns con con- cerns or talent shows and anci beauty pageants I I. hope that next quarter CAB accepts accept the challenge of providing students with a wide wid variety of activities allowing everyone to get their moneys money's worth not just a a segregated few |
