Show I More to Work Less to College Utah Students Alter Post-High Post School Intentions Utah high school seniors have altered their attitudes toward post postgraduate postgraduate postgraduate graduate activities drastically drastically drastically cally during this past decade decade decade de de- cade according to statistics statistics statistics statis statis- tics released from the State Office of Educations Education's Division of Education Support Services The percentage percentage percentage per per- of seniors who had plans to go directly into the work force after graduation last spring for instance was nearly double double double dou dou- ble what it was in 1969 In that year percent were intending to enter employment immediately after their public school school- ing This last spring however however however how how- ever the figure had risen to percent At the same time the number of seniors who intended intended intended in in- tended on going on to college college college col col- lege for further training stood at right close to 70 percent in 1969 In 1979 only 54 percent displayed an interest in college as a apost apost apost post graduate alternative Part of the reason for this drop in the college-bound college students according to the survey is a somewhat higher percentage of students students students stu stu- dents who are choosing vocational vocational vocational vo vo- school for further schooling However the data reflects less than a aone aone aone one percent rise in those wi with th intentions of entering entering entering enter enter- ing the states state's vocational vocation ial programs The real rise in graduate graduate graduate grad grad- intentions comes in the category labeled other Here students re- re 8 fleeted an interest in doing something other than entering the work force the military or further training after high school graduation In 1969 only two percent of the students responded in the other category The recently released released released re re- leased statistics though show percent of the students responding in inthis inthis inthis this category Overall the percentage of students expressing an interest in any type of post high school education has dropped from the figure of 84 percent in 1969 to last years year's 66 percent This means that 18 percent fewer students have plans to enter college a vocational vocational vocational voca voca- school a business school or state out-of-state schools The figures also indicate that students with lower grades are less likely to want to enter a post high school educational program program program pro pro- gram than students with higher grades Less than half of the students with a aC aC aC C average or less in fact expressed an interest in getting more education after their high school graduation The survey conducted annually by the State Office Office Office Of Of- fice of Education is ti titled tIed Intentions of Utah's Graduates and gives a statistical picture of what seniors intend to do after graduation but it does not necessarily reflect what they actually end up doing |
