Show Into the Lions Lion's Den DenBy By Trudi Smith I HI came with a goal As I walked into the administrative office of Dr Dale S. S Cowgill President of at Salt Lake I was given a brief glimpse inside the man who resides there With a simple survey of the room from the panelled walls to the stuffed sitting chairs I learned that Dr Cowgill is a man with simple tastes and a love of beauty A small but majestic watercolor hangs above his bookcase a piece of art given to him by his teenage daughter and adds a touch of beauty to the room I was offered juice and coffee coffee coffee cof cof- fee and as I settled into my chair I began a fascinating interview with a unique administrator Dr Cowgill was born in Washington DC D.C. and being a son of travelling parents had travelled through 40 states before reaching the age of four He has lived in Utah however since sixth grade and has acquired most of his education in Utah schools Dr Cowgill has taught Sunday School since 1949 taking only two years off during during during dur dur- ing graduate school and was an instructor at Webert Weber r A f l' l i t N NM f J I I Mi 11 vrR M u 1 oj I 4 I as J f ft 14 tl t l 9 Eo t it r State and Iowa State colleges teaching courses in mechanical technology Before coming to in 1979 Dr Cowgill was Assistant Dean and later Dean of technology at Weber State Dr Cowgill met his wife of almost 25 years in Ogden They have four children all daughters two of whom are attending college and two who are junior high students His interests are many and varied He loves to read especially enjoying history science fiction and mysteries Other hobbies are landscaping and woodworking Dr Cowgill is very active in sports both as a participator and as a spectator His favorites are softball basketball and tennis The Cowgills have a cabin in the high where he enjoys one of his loved best-loved past times walking Dr Cowgill has a deep pride in his accomplishments and those of his family but also a humbleness that is refreshing He is a simple man with a friendliness that thatis is easy to relax with My juice is finished and the time has flown so I must let this man return to his joy As I leave I find myself hoping that he achieves his goal I tel came with a goal that of teaching students rather than teaching subjects |
