| Show Horizons and Hope A Shelter for Runaways by Joe Shelton Dave Condie is the director of a 24 hour runaway shelter shelter shelter shel shel- ter located in Salt Lake The Shelter is called Horizons somewhat of a primitive old home yet strong and stable enough to house ten kids at a time Average length of stay for a runaway youth is four to five days Each youth will willbe willbe willbe be treated as an individual said Mr Condie The kids range in age from 12 to 17 and and after after Horizons has put them back in control and resolved their family differences differences differences differ differ- they go home We HWe strive to help troubled youths within the context of their own family Mr Condie stated Our experience is that running away truancy and drug abuse are responses responses responses re re- to deteriorated relationships with their families and other important institutions in their lives We seek to involve all of these institutions impacting upon the childs child's life so as to interrupt and reverse the youths youth's crumbling relationships and isolation from these Horizons functions as a catalyst to render strengthened relationships between the child his home and his environment |
