Show Letters to the Editor Conservation continues Help needed for changes Dear Editor Two letters appeared recently rec recently re re- c in Points West regarding regarding regarding regard regard- ing energy conservation efforts efforts efforts ef ef- ef- ef forts on campus Perhaps a little ba background information might be helpful An Executive Order from the Governors Governor's office in March 1978 requires that all State institutions coo cooperate rate in conserving all forms of ener ener- gy It It also provided that the State Building Buil ng Board would see that all State owned buildings comply with lighting lighting lighting light light- ing standards by April 30 1978 insofar as was practical A federal grant was provid provid- provided ed to the State Building Board to facilitate conformance with the lighting standards standard's charge of the Executive Order During the Fall Quarter Quarter Quarter ter representatives s from the State Building Board were on campus and measured the light levels in all rooms to determine compliance with the Illuminating Engineering Engineer Engineer- ing Society Lighting Handbooks Handbooks Handbooks Hand Hand- books lighting standards The The first phase of the project was completed in December However it was determined that some areas th that t required close lose detailed work were after fluorescent tubes were removed removed re- re removed re re- moved from the fixtures These areas were readjusted for a higher level of tion The second phase of ot the State Building Boards Board's I project pro pro- project 1 is to disconnect the ballasts in each fluorescent fixture to implement the total savings effect of reducing illumination The point that ballasts do consume energy is quite true However the ballasts will consume 11 to 12 watts rather than rather than the 55 watts as pointed out in one of the letters to the editor i Continued efforts are being f J made by all staff faculty and andr r students in helping meet the Govern Governors Governor's rs r's reco recommendation menda tion of reducing energy t tion by 10 percent this year and an addit additional 15 percent next year Of course to meet v 4 t this goal it does require a high level of awareness of conservation conservation conservation conser conser- methods and cooperation cooperation cooperation tion by the total campus community The Energy Conservation Conservation Conservation Con Con- Committee would certainly appreciate any suggestions suggestions sug sug- sug- sug from any one of o the campus community in helping helping helping help help- ing us meet our goals Sincerely Walter L.
